Music Review: The loudest murmur you'll ever hear.

I'd like to start this review by simply saying that I am a huge R.E.M. fan, and this album will always be near and dear to my heart. But I'm not here to review this album for sentimentality. I think it's fair to say that most of the people reading reviews for this Deluxe Edition of Murmur are probably already familiar with the original album and are looking for a reason why they should upgrade to the Deluxe Edition.
First of all, as many others have said in their reviews, the remaster really does sound great. Well, it should, because it's actually Mobile Fidelity's old remaster from 1995. The mastering engineer (Greg Calbi) did modify the MFSL master by very slightly boosting the treble and cutting the bass, and making it louder. It was done tastefully, but to my ears, the MFSL version still sounds better.
However, the MFSL version isn't as easy to come by as it once was, and even if you get a used one, you'll probably end up paying at least the same price for it as you would for this, and you wouldn't get a second CD with a rare concert from 1983. So, is it worth it to get the Deluxe Edition? Yes.
Now, what if you're new to R.E.M. and don't really know anything beyond, say, Losing My Religion and Everybody Hurts? I would tell you find a streaming media website that has a few of the tracks from Murmur on it and take a listen. If you like what you hear and want the album, this would definitely be the version to get. Great liner notes, great sound quality, and the concert on the second disc does a great job of capturing the essence of those raw, energetic early R.E.M. shows. Oh yeah, and it's easier to find and cheaper than the MFSL version.

This two disc collection is completely remastered. The first disc is the original I.R.S. album which was released on April 12, 1983. The second disc is previously unreleased live show from Larry's Hideaway in Toronto, Canada performed on July 9, 1983.General CDs
