Music reviews of Live at the Village VanguardMusic Review: Outstanding Musical Feast at a Bargain Price
Bargain does not imply cheap! There is nothing cheap about this music. These 7Cd's document a number of live engagements(1990-1991,1993-1994)of an important 90's band brilliantly recorded by National Public Radio and issued by Columbia. In terms of style this music fits the sociology of its progenitor, intelligent, confident, stylish small band swing, and is more related to Shelley Manne's Blackhawk series than it is to Miles at The Plugged Nickel. There is no pushing the envelope. The music is not exploratory. Which is not to say it isn't full of variety, and inventiveness. It is straight ahead "mainstream" jazz that swings and provides much room for extended solos by all concerned. Most of the more interesting works are originals by Mr Marsalis but he pays homage to the tradition especially but not exclusively to the giants Duke Ellington(Rubber Bottom, and Play the Blues and Go, perhaps reminding us that the Duke wrote over 2000 compositions other than Sophisticated Lady)and Monk(Evidence,Bright Mississippi,Reflections, Monk's Mood, etc). To give an example of this wonderful music, take Track Two of the second CD. Of the three separate septets recorded, this track features Mr Marsalis, trumpet,Mr Wessell Anderson on tenor, soprano or clarinet, Mr Wycliffe Gordon on trombone, Mr Eric Reed on piano, Mr Reginald Veal on bass, and Mr Herlin Riley on drums. The composition is called Uptown Ruler and is an original by Mr Marsalis. He explains to us(the listener in the audience at the Village Vanguard and the listener to the CD) that the title refers to a classy educated individual who is also quite at home in a bawdy house. It begins with a vocal call and response chorus straight out of Africa backed by a single drum beat. The bass and piano enter, the drumming expands and a chorus of horns state the theme. Then a low down dirty trumpet sound comes in followed by a majestic clean flourish and back to the low down dirty sound. It is as if there is an internal battle going on in the trumpet whether to follow the high ground or the low. An excellent piano solo follows from Mr Eric Reed with occasional flourishes reminiscent of Mr Jackie Byard. The theme is restated by the horns, then a drum solo by Mr Herlin Riley follows without flash or ostentation, creating a beautifully controlled startement perfectly suited to the work. A horn chorus follows and the work closes with a return to the opening vocal. This piece might be seen as a musical miniature of the history of the music. It's very impressive. And this is one of nine tracks on one of seven CD's. That's a LOT of interesting and excellent jazz. And clearly the recording shows the musicians love the music they are creating. The stage persona of Mr Marsalis, where at the beginning of CD2 he invites the audience to acknowledge Mr Lionel Hampton, where he puts the audience at ease through humour and humility sets the atmosphere wonderfully well. There is no doubting the sincerity of Mr Marsalis being a servant to the music, himself the instrument through which it speaks. Is there a better Ambassador for the music known as Jazz? The art work is excellent, the notes by Stanley Crouch, and the whole production, outstanding.
