Music Review: Easy listening country flavored Christmas music

Since going solo, Wynonna has sometimes strayed from her country roots. While this is markedly different in style from the Christmas album that Wynonna recorded with her mother in the eighties, it should have plenty of appeal to fans of contemporary country music. A slight disappointment is that Wynonna chose to re-record many of the songs that you'll find on Christmas time with the Judds. Well, at least if you listen to both, you'll notice the contrast. The musicians credited here play guitars, drums, upright bass, French horn, English horn, oboe, harp, harmonica and a vast number of strings, but Wynonna's lovely voice is always the focus.
Of the songs, the only original here (It's the messiah) closes the album and is indeed an excellent song, as well as being the album's highlight for me. Wynonna sings the familiar classics superbly. Two of them (Ave Maria, O come o come Emmanuel) are rarely found on country Christmas albums, so it's great to find them here. The other familiar classics are The Christmas song, Winter wonderland, White Christmas, I'll be home for Christmas, Santa Claus is coming to town, Have yourself a merry little Christmas, O holy night and Silent night.
This is a superb Christmas album that, rather like Jo Dee Messina's Christmas album, might appeal as much to fans of easy listening singers such as Doris Day as it does to country music fans. But hey! I'm a huge Doris Day fan as well as a huge country music fan, so I'm not complaining. Those who only want to hear traditional country music should forget this and buy Christmas time with the Judds.

Wynonna delivers a few gems too that'll leave you speechless, especially the emotional "Ave Maria" recorded in Italianized Latin. Wynonna's first solo holiday album comes across as a thing of beauty, but also as something of a surprise, and not just because she tackles "Ave Maria" in Italianized Latin. Though paired with the original team behind the Judds (producer Brent Maher, musical arranger/guitarist Don Potter), the normally fiery redhead seems subdued on this collection of mostly reverent holiday fare. Throughout, Bergen White's arrangements are fresh and often sophisticated, Maher and Potter hang just the right amount of tinsel on the tree, and Wynonna's soaring soprano remains a wondrous instrument. (Even her kids, Grace and Elijah, impress on "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town," the album's lightest offering.) But the down-home diva seems to hold back both passion and power, particularly on the show-your-stuff standard "O Holy Night." Where she most comes alive is on Potter's 1983 offering, "It's the Messiah," a modern take on the birth of Jesus. It's a lovely coda to this smooth, if oddly spiceless, eggnog entry. --Alanna Nash
