Music Review: Solti made a lovely Cosi - but not this one

While this live "Cosi" from 1996 gets all the attention, and a starry cast thanks to Fleming and von Otter, Decca has slipped Solti's first version from 1973 into its super-bargain opera line. But it's the one to get, an affectionate, genial reading that makes this one seem stiff and driven. "Cosi" has suffered a sea change over the years. If you go back to the classic Bohm set from 1962 (EMI), the style is elegant, aristocratic, and rather cool. But once Cosi morphed into a drama about the betrayal of women and the fecklessness of men, the opera's drama became sharper and at times bitter -- satire trumps romance in most modern productions.

This change leaves room for Solti's approach, which is clipped and pointed rather than lyrical and elegant. But should Cosi really provoke no smiles at all? This one certainly doesn't. Hampered by Solti's foursquare beat, not to mention his slowish tempos, Fleming and von Otter are the least charming sisters I've ever heard, both given to seriousness and self-conscious mannerisms. Fleming has never been the most natural of vocal actresses, but neither was Monserrat Caballe, and she outshines Fleming as Fiordiligi on the Colin Davis set from the Seventies (EMI), aided by Janet Baker's instense Dorabella, which leave von Otter far behind. The men are also humorless, but I msut admit that Ferrando and Guglielmo for once sound like genuine soldiers, and are actually angry in the opening scene. Lopardo and Bar in general feel more convincing than their girlfriends. Pertusi's Don Alfonso is flat, however, being neither sly, worldly nor cynical.

I won't elaborate. Despite the live setting, this performance misses the wise, humane, humorous side of Cosi by a mile, and without those quintessentially Mozartean qualities, no performance can really succeed.

This delicately balanced story of two engaged couples who are inveigled into a brief flirtation with infidelity inspired some of the finest music Mozart ever composed. It is often textured with the fine nuances of chamber music, with some particularly delectable woodwind parts, and it progresses from contrived artificiality--when the two men make a rash bet with a friend about the unshakable faithfulness of their fianc?es--into intense despair when that fidelity begins to be shaken. There is also slapstick-level comedy. It is all held together under Georg Solti's genial direction, with singing--solo and ensemble--of the highest quality. --Joe McLellan
