Music Review: A Fine Collection of Period Music

This is one of those collections that brings the past into the present. The song selection gives the listener a nice overview of the music of the Civil War era, some of which I have not seen on other collections, although it does have a Rebel bent. But then, Mr. Erbsen does specialize in ancient music of Appalachia. The fact that we are listening to period music on period instruments lends to the authenticity of the mood portrayed, even though it may not have been heard in this style at a dance hall. More likely at a local barn dance or maybe even in a military camp.
Mr. Erbsen's vocals can be almost grating initially but will grow on you after a couple of listens.
My particular favorites are Just Before the Battle Mother, Cumberland Gap, Tramp Tramp Tramp, and Here's Your Mule.
This would make a nice addition to one's period music collection.
