I like poor Warren Zevon's songs for many of the same reasons I like Randy Newman's. They don't sound at all alike, but they both have a fine sense of irony most modern song lyrics lack, although they are sometimes a little too clever. The sincere songs can be touching, again in a way that most modern songs miss. Accidentally like a Martyr is a nice honest expression. Whether an artist ought to pour his heart out to the public is another question. I think artists need to insulate themselves from their own sensitivity so that they don't destroy themselves with drugs and alcohol. One needs to find other ways of dealing with this wish for inner elevation. Anyway, this is a collection of most of his best songs and they show all his talents: his wit, his poetic sensibility: El Amor de Mi Vida is beautiful, and Keep Me In Your Heart is very moving.
