Music Review: ANOTHER TRULY GREAT NORMA

I've had the privilege to see and hear Shirley Verrett live at the Met many times. It is a shame we don't have more CDS and DVDS of this great artist. She truly made the transition from Mezzo-soprano to dramatic soprano very successfully and this great recording and performance prove this. This is truly another great performance of this most demanding of roles. Miss Verrett is in great voice throughout this live San Francisco performance from 1978. Her coloratura is excellent, she floats many beautiful piano high notes; yet,never misses any dramatic moments either. Hers is a great dramatic and vocal performance.
I have heard only four such huge voices as hers: Crespin, Ross, Deutekom and of course Verrett. Even in the last row of the balcony of the Met you could hear every note and word of those four ladies. All great performers. Ross and Deutekom also sang NORMA very successfully.
This is one of Gala's best sounding releases. With great live historic performances I easily never make sound a deterring issue; otherwise I wouldn't have so many great experiences. i.e. Traubel and Melchior, Price and Corelli appearing in the same opera etc.
The rest of the cast, conductor, orchestra and chorus are fine also.
A great Norma and definitely worth having just for Shirley Verrett's portrayal of this great challenge to the dramatic soprano voice. I also believe one should have a Callas, Cerquetti & Corelli, Deutekom & Corelli in Parma 1971(very rare and hard to find), Sills, Caballe, Sutherland & Horne and Gruberova on DVD to get all the myriad facets of this complex role.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!
