Music Review: Mid-life ruminations or .....how I recovered a childhood!

It may be a bit of a misnomer to actually call this wonderful disc " A Charlie Brown Christmas " since even I can tell, after only purchasing the cd two days ago, that I will be playing said disc the entire year round! Talk about 'cool jazz!' Vince Guaraldi's music for this album simply screams Brubeck with a little Bill Evans thrown in for good measure. The songs are not only harmonically strong but so incredibly melodic that I found myself hitting the repeat button on my stereo so as to keep this wonderful music playing throughout the evening. Plus, the tone and sound of the disc is so incredibly intimate and warm that, in some small way, I wished someone were here to enjoy this 'coziness' with me. Now, if I'd only had a fireplace! I will admit to the fact that "Christmas Time Is Here" did make me stop what I was doing and forced me to sit down and listen with a childlike wonder. I guess truly beautiful music never does go out of style....regardless of how old we get! No matter what your Christmas memories may be hearing Mr. Guaraldi's versions of these standards will melt the 'Grinch' in all of us and perhaps help make some new Christmas memories as well. But, just maybe, what is so incredible about this album is simply that it doesn't require you to listen only during the holiday season. 'Good' music should be played year round and " A Charlie Brown Christmas " will most certainly be coming out of my speakers in July as well as December. What more could we possibly as for in a piece of music!

In finishing up, I think tonight it's just going to be Charlie Brown, spiked egg nog and yours truly! I can't answer for the rest of you, of course, but in my case I think I need to 'look back' just once more. I'm not sure what I'll find but I have learned that getting there is half the fun!
