Music Review: Whatever Sums It Up Nicely - This Is The 90s Box Set With An Identity Crisis

Unlike the nostalgic '70s (Have a Nice Decade) and the '80s (Like, Omigod!) deluxe box sets Rhino released which made an effort to provide multiple discs of some of the biggest and most popular songs of the decade they represented (sans the ones they could not get for licensing reasons), this Whatever '90s compilation can't decide what it wants to be. Instead of trying to focus on the popular hit songs of the era like its predecessors, 'Whatever' struggles to determine whether it wants to be a Grunge Rock box set or a timecapsule of '90s hit pop music. Instead, we get several discs of Grunge Rock, which may or may not be songs you know (unless you were a hard core Grunge Fan - in which case you have them already) meshed with a random scattering of popular radio hits from the era.

Unlike the other boxes Rhino did for the prior to decades, this one just doesn't cut it. They should have done either a pure Grunge Rock box set or a '90s hits box set, but this blend is extremely disappointing. By far, its the worst of the three decade boxes I have purchased from them. It has some great music on there, but the mix of semi-obsecure tracks by Sub-Pop artists and alike just sounds silly entangled with songs like "I'll Be There For You" (the theme from the TV show Friends) by the Rembrandts, "Gonna Make You Sweat" by C&C Music Factory, and so on. Because of this, the "Whatever" title is perfect - this must have been someone's answer when they asked, "Does someone want to use any quality control?" or "Should this be a fair representation of the '90s or a mix between unpopular indy grunge and pop hits?" Whatever, indeed! There was a lot of lost potential with this set. Even the booklet pales in comparison to the prior retrospective booklets of the '80s and '70s sets. If you are looking for the definitive '90s collection - this isn't it. Keep looking.

Remember the 1990s? Dot-com booms and stock market pinnacles? The fall of the Wall, the rise of Desert Storm, Presidential impeachment, and Beavis & Butt-head? The decade of grunge power, alt-rock diversity, and hip-hop evolution? The decade of grunge power, alt-rock diversity, and hip-hop evolution? It's an era that's oh-so-close, yet already so far away. If you're pining for those '90s, and we know you are-our monlithic new 7-disc box takes you back to the good old days in style.
You'd be right to be excited about Rhino Records' voluminous compilation, Whatever: The '90s Pop and Culture Box. After all, they did such a great job with their 1980s comps, not to mention all their various approaches to prior decades, from the original Nice Day series to the expanded and brilliant Nuggets collections. Whatever is a seven-disc set that comes with a bag of stale coffee inside it. This US-centric collection has a lot of great tracks on it, from throwaway songs ("Sunscreen," "Sex And Candy") to absolute classics ("Baby Got Back," "Under the Bridge"). But ultimately, it's a complete and utter mess. A lot happened in the '90s of course; hip-hop went pop, rock got funky and weird, grunge broke open and imploded, Moby sampled the Lomax archives for a surprise hit, even the weirdest indie bands had cash thrown at them by major labels, the daisy age morphed into the chronic age, and dance music was quite nearly the next big thing. Rather than provide a narrative of underground and mainstream movements, this set smacks of the sort of lowest common denominator, novelty-centric approach that makes lowbrow VH1 programs only fleetingly satisfying. Sheesh. Hip-hop, metal, and dance music are barely covered here. And the lack of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" alone is enough to make the listener want to return the set with the words "try again" scrawled into the cover. --Mike McGonigal
