Music reviews of The Road Mix: Music from the Television Series One Tree Hill, Vol. 3

Music Review: A Very OTH Mix
Rating: 4 Stars

Over the last few years it seems like One Tree Hill (OTH) has really gained momentum in its popularity - perhaps it part due to the excellent little details that make the show great like its continually fitting and relatively memorable soundtrack. In general the 'sound' of the show has been a bit of a traditional emo/indie rock vibe, with a few classics and other twists thrown in for good measure.

I believe the concept behind this album is supposed to be tunes played on the road trip episode when the gang goes to Honey Grove, TX in Season 4 - but I'm pretty sure the tunes range from various parts of the 4th season.

That being said, this is a solid, well-mixed album, although I wish I could place a few more songs with moments from the show - especially toward the latter half where it burns out a bit. The strongest tunes, in my opinion, come from the first half of the album. Dashboard Confessional's "Don't Wait" was used several times on the show and provides a good opening, while The Honorary Title's contribution "Stay Away" will grow on you and get seriously stuck in your head. The Kooks and Band of Horses contribute two solid brit-rock-tinged tunes before we get one of the more unique tunes, Jose Gonzalez's cover of "Heartbeats" - best known for its use in a Sony Bravia commercial, but also from a memorable scene in the fourth season.

Tyler Hilton, guest star of OTH contributes a half-decent acoustic-y mid-tempo track, then to change things up again you've got a great Lupe Fiasco hip hop tune and Gym Class Heroes 80s-ish take on the Beach Boys 'Good Vibrations'. The Wreckers, another OTH guest group, has a relatively generic but enjoyable tune to round up the mid-section.

As I said, the last part of the album still has good tunes, but they're not quite as distinct - you don't have any standouts (in terms of style, not quality) like Jose Gonzalez or Lupe Fiasco. I'm personally a big fan of Iron & Wine although their tune here might turn a few fans off thanks to the opera bits. Also the last song is a tad toooo long for me...

Otherwise though, a great compilation - perfect for background music at parties or road trips of your own, whether a OTH fan or not.

Description of The Road Mix: Music from the Television Series One Tree Hill, Vol. 3

For the first time in television history, a mixtape heard in an episode will become a soundtrack album. Containing hits from artists such as Lupe Fiasco, Dashboard Confessional and The Wreckers, The Road Trip is another innovative musical breakthrough for a series that continues to be an indie showcase.
Key to the success of this prime-time teen soap opera has been a mix of contemporary rock and pop that musically embroiders the show's increasingly complex mix of hope, fear, and youthful angst with often melodramatic flair. This third volume of songs from the successful series continues in that tradition while, as the title suggests, exploring a little wider artistic range. "Don't Wait" by Dashboard Confessional and the Honorary Title's "Stay Away" immediately anchor the set with a familiar tone of urgency, while star Tyler Hilton offers up another expected sensitive acoustic ballad in "You'll Ask for Me." But elsewhere, the collection admirably pushes the envelope via such tasty, eclectic morsels as the infectious pop of the Kooks' "Naïve," Gym Class Heroes turning "Good Vibrations" into a stripped-down shuffle, and the effusive hip-hop-pop of Lupe Fiasco's "I Gotcha." But it's still a collection centered largely on the contemplative, indie spirit embodied by the Wreckers' gorgeous "Lay Me Down," Lucero's emotive dirge "Tell Me What It Takes," and the Constantines' similarly focused "Soon Enough." --Jerry McCulley
