Music Review: Excellent - Real Celtic Lullabies

This CD lives in our CD player. I actually find myself humming some of these songs occasionally, along with the songs from the other Ellipsis album Celtic Dreams (I prefer this one). This is an excellent CD for children, and for adults with any taste for traditional music - I bought about a half-dozen albums with titles that were variations on "Celtic Lullaby": this and it's companion take the prize. Of course, one doesn't need to be a Celt to enjoy this. If you're a derascinated Celt, however, and you want to get some exposure to a tradition that you've been robbed of, this is a good way (if this is part of your aim, also pick up "The Virgin's Lament (Caoineadhi Na Maighdine)" by Noirin Ni Riain).
No two songs on this CD or it's companion are recorded by the same artist, and many of the tracks are also found on another album by the recording artist (references to these are given in the liner notes, so if you like an artist, you can pursue it further). One recording in particular would do better with another vocalist, but they never bothered me, who am fairly picky about these things, and more importantly they never bother my daughter. I will say that Suo Gan has a much better recording that can be found as the first track on the Empire Of The Sun: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack CD (though I also enjoy this one), and Taladh Chriosda has a wondrous version on the CD Anuna (though this one is pleasant).
The slipcase and cardboard foldout case are very nice, with the exception of the CD slipcase - it's a pocket of smooth cardboard, and I would have liked to have seen a traditional pop-in segment. No matter - very nicely done, and worthy of five stars.
Oh, and my daughter loves these, usually calms down to them when she's colicy, and otherwise does, in fact, fall asleep to them. Definitely five stars.
Description of The Celtic Lullaby
Celtic LullabyA collection of traditional lullabies from Ireland, Scotland, Wales & beyond to coax, cuddle and caress a child to sleep. Ethereal and enduring, each of these cradle songs has a melody that delights and lingers within the listener. The Boston globe called this compilation "the sleeper of the year" because as soothing as these songs are to a child, they will also satisfy and please a parent. Harps, whistles, mandolins and flutes create crystalline textures, and the Gaelic lyrics and translations provided give insight into linguistic rhythms, shades of meaning, and even historical references.
So much has been made of the music for babies and children to sleep, eat, and have their brains grow optimally that a collection of lullabies might seem a little suspect. But when the folks at Ellipsis Arts take up the task of creating a lullaby collection, the results are bound to be fruitful. Sure, the emphasis in this collection of 19 songs is on gentleness, but this music is so seldom heard that it's endlessly enticing. The Celtic lullabies range from three-part Welsh carols to the overtone-tinted wooden flute of Chris Norman on "Now I Am Asleep" to several showings for acoustic harp that highlight vocals by singers such as Jill Rogoff and Ann Mayo Muir. The unfortunate trend of globetrotting CDs that lose all their geographic specificity is easily bucked here with songs sung in Manx Gaelic and the more familiar Irish. The set even takes into account the farthest reaches of the Celtic diaspora by including a religious Nova Scotian melody with mother Mary singing to the baby Jesus, "Tha mi 'g altrum Righ na M?rachd" ("I am nursing the Almighty King," for all you non-Gaelic speakers). The blurred edges throughout this selection move toward sonic dreaminess, made more warmly vaporous by the pillowing effect of the instrumental accompaniments. --Andrew Bartlett
