Music Review: Don`t take the Mickey, this is a brilliant album

As a fan of both bluegrass and country music, it doesn't really matter to me whether this album contains bluegrass or country music. However, as the album is sub-titled The voices of bluegrass sing the best of Disney, I can see why some bluegrass fans complain. Two tracks are instrumental (so no voices of any kind there), while the voices on the remaining tracks are more commonly associated with country music rather than bluegrass. That said, the instruments credited are acoustic guitars, bass, dobro, fiddle, banjo and mandolin, together with occasional harmonica or autoharp, so the backing music has all the elements of bluegrass even though the overall sound comes across as a blend of country and bluegrass.
Collin Raye performs the opening track here, Circle of life (from Lion King), which he ends with a small segment of Will the circle be unbroken? He clearly enjoys singing children's music, having recorded his own album of children's songs (Counting sheep), though that's one album I haven't heard. Elizabeth Cook, a brilliant singer who would be a major star if her brand of traditional country music were fashionable, also seems to enjoy herself on Zip-a-dee-doo-dah (from Song of the south). She takes it a slower pace than Bob B Soxx and the Blue Jeans did back in the sixties, but it works well. Kevin Montgomery, who is another seriously under-rated singer, shows his brilliance on You'll be in my heart (from Tarzan).
I haven't come across Caroline Brown's music before, but she sounds wonderful on Baby mine (a ballad from Dumbo). Next is a banjo-led instrumental version of Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious. I never cared much for the silly lyrics of this song, but it works well as an instrumental. Veteran country singer Stonewall Jackson is in good form on Bare necessities (from Jungle book), which reminds me that I still haven't bought any of his own music. Sonya Isaacs (who often records as a member of the Isaacs) sounds as good as ever on When she loved me (from Toy story 2).
Amanda Martin and Lyle Goodman are new names to me, but they do a fine duet of You've got a friend in me (from Toy story). Next comes the second and last instrumental, which is a medley of Mickey Mouse club march / Ballad of Davy Crockett. Robbie Fulks does well singing When I see an elephant fly (from Dumbo) then veteran singer Charlie Louvin shows that he's still in good form on I will go sailing no more (from Toy story). Ronnie Milsap, whose own hit-making days are long past, is in top form on When you wish upon a star (from Pinocchio), which closes the album.
I love this album, but you must decide for yourself if it is your kind of music or not. Is it bluegrass? Is it country? Judging the album purely by the quality of the music, I regard it as another brilliant addition to my slowly growing collection of children`s music that adults can enjoy. Actually, I suspect that adults may enjoy this particular album at least as much as children, perhaps more so.

It's not what you're thinking: No Mickey squeaking out Ralph Stanley songs, no picking and grinning Goofy, no banjo-wielding Pluto woofing mountain music. Instead, O Mickey assembles a first-rate cast of country players for a down-home roundup of Disney covers, from Collin Raye's "Circle of Life" to Ronnie Milsap's "When You Wish Upon a Star" to Stonewall Jackson's warm "The Bare Necessities." It works, based not only on performances by the better-known artists (Charlie Louvin included), but also a couple of bona fide instrumental boot-stompers--"Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious" gets the dueling fiddles treatment, and "The Mickey Mouse Club March" medley lock-steps it to mandolin and Dobro. Directing bluebirds squarely to shoulders is Elizabeth Cook's breezy "Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah," but if there's a shortcoming here it's the blurring of country and bluegrass, a muddling of styles apt to get any self-respecting Soggy Bottom Boy's britches in a twist. --Tammy La GorceChildren's Music CDs
