Music reviews of Music From the O.C. Mix 2

Music Review: best TV soundtrack to date
Rating: 5 Stars

The music in the O.C. is awesome. Everyone admits it. The critics, the fans, the music industry, even those who hate the show have to admit that the music is good, and mix two is a wonderful example of that. Unlike the one tree hill soundtrack, which mostly features the more well known music, the O.C.'s mixe's are filled with mostly independent bands, or good artists that have yet to make it onto the scene. The two biggest band names on this mix (the killers and keane) have just very recently found success themselves, and aside from one or two other's on here, a very large portion of the album was unknown to me.

"Music from the O.C. Mix 2" features sixteen bits of pop and rock glory. The songs one the mix were selected carefully, to best reflect the show. Most of the most major moments have a song playing with them, and most of those "big moment" songs, are featured on this disc, so you'll be able to sit there with this album playing while the scenes are played over in your head. Every fan of the show will have songs they wish had been featured on the disc. Mine was Jeff Buckleys flawless cover of the song "Hallelujah" which plays in the closing minutes of the season 1 finale and is likely the most memorable moment of the show for me. However, it is a small complaint seeing as the song was released over ten years ago.

The songs on this CD are so damn good that you'll be up in anticipation for the next mix the second you here them. The killers' "Smile Like You Mean It" from the episode where they performed live, is incredible, as is "saterday morning" from the eels. The two exclusive cuts are wonderful as well. Jem's cover of Paul McCartney's "Maybe Im Amazed" turns the rock song into a piano ballad which is quite gorgeous. The other is Nada Surf's cover of "If You Leave" which sounds a whole lot like the original, but since its coming from the one hit wonder band that released the godawful "Popular" back in the 90's, its pretty good. The best song on the album however comes from a small swedish band in the form of "Trouble Sleeping" a ballad with a sweeping guitar, incredible vocals, and excellent songwriting. Keane's contribution is an exclusive non album track called "walnut tree" and if you've heard any of keane's other stuff, then you should know what to expect. It's not much different from most of the stuff on their debut album, and since all those songs were spectacular, this one is as well. "A Lack Of Color" by Death cab for cutie is awesome as well.

The Weakest track on the album comes in the form of the last track on the album. "Eastern Glow" by the album leaf, doesn't have any lyrics. Its ok, but its not a good closing track, and i figure it could have been replaced with something better ("Hallelujah" perhaps). However its nothing bad, its just kind of boring.

I believe this to be the best of the latest wave of TV soundtracks, because it introduces you to so many wonderful new artists. I don't own mix four yet, so that may be better, but until then, im giving this mix a deserving five stars. If you're a fan of the show, its a must have, if not, i guarantee you'll stil find something to enjoy here.

Description of Music From the O.C. Mix 2

The OC, the phenomenally successful Fox Television series has pioneered the creative use of storytelling through song and, in the process, become a showcase for some of the most innovative and original artists in music. Music From The OC Mix 2 follows the inaugural release of Mix 1 which debuted earlier this year to critical and popular acclaim. The compilation features music from the second half of the first and early episodes of the second season and boasts three exclusive tracks: Jem's cover of Paul McCartney's "Maybe I'm Amazed" and Nada Surf's cover of OMD's "If You Leave," both recorded specifically for the series, plus The Walkman's live version of "Little House of Savages." Mix 2 highlights the program's trend-setting approach to music with songs from an extraordinary variety of new and emerging artists including Interpol, The Killers, Death Cab For Cutie and more.
It's impossible to listen to Music From the O.C. Mix 2 without wondering what the 16 acts represented think of being associated with the show. These, after all, are largely the kind of too-cool-for-school indie bands--Nada Surf, Death Cab for Cutie, Eels, Interpol--you'd normally expect to run screaming from anything so heavily soaked in mainstream reek. Credit the show's exceptional music supervisor Alexandra Patsavas, then, with rounding them up and wrangling them into contributing, and also for choosing her selections carefully. More than a collection that would slip effortlessly into any hipster's car CD player for its left of the dial leanings, 2 showcases many of these emerging bands' best songs yet: The Thrills' "Big Sur" is a sun-soaked slice of pop heaven, "Maybe I'm Amazed" makes elegant use of a cover to capture the dreaminess of the darkly talented Jem, and "You Got Me All Wrong," by Dios Malos, is maybe the most ravishing rainy day rock song ever written. As with the first O.C. mix, 2 is enhanced with scenes from the show. Pop it into your computer and hum along as the drama unfolds; if anyone catches you, tell them it's the coolness of the music you're captivated by. -Tammy La Gorce
