Music Review: Yeah, Cool CD, but...

Yeah, good cd, but what gives with the OC? All of a sudden, this mainstream little show picks up all these artists that have been around way before the show, and all of a sudden all these OC junkies are running around thinking they discovered sliced bread.
Anyhow, this is a pretty good comp, I'm not totally bashing it. It's definitely worth your money, I just don't appreciate some tv show trying to make money off of a scene that's been there for a while. If you're really into music, and you appreciate the talent and the brilliance of some of these artists, get their cd's, not just this soundtrack. I don't want to sound like a bitter dude, but when some of your favorite bands end up on some ultra commercial sampler, it's a little annoying.
Spoon is a great band from Texas, definitely worth your time to check out. I'd recommend "Kill the Moonlight" with songs like "Jonathon Fisk" or "The Way We Get By", or the album "Girls Can Tell", with tunes like "Everything Hits at Once" or "Believing is Art". The songs have a certain kind of jangly feel to them, like earlier Elvis Costello, crafting little pop songs from Brit Daniel's decidedly introspective voice.
Very much worth your time to check would be the band South. From northern London, South released their 2nd album, "With the Tides" in 2003. A brilliant and sometimes atmospherically haunting record, the songs flow together perfectly to create a vision of ennui and pensive reflection, while the music is reminiscent of the brand of British sound that the Stone Roses made famous with their infamous reverb-drenched vocals. South's first record, "From Here On In" is also worth your time. Though not decidedly as dark, its moments of Brit-pop don't disappoint. These guys are one of my favorite new bands.
Also worth a listen would be the band Doves. Their 2002 album, "The Last Broadcast" was a great mix of poppy melodies and talented songwriting. As of March 1, 2005, they released "Some Cities" on EMI Recs. Look for the newcoming single, "Black and White Town".
I guess credit should be given to the OC people for bringing all of this great music to more ears, but there's something that seems really artificial about these little comps. The OC comps are worth listening to, but PLEASE don't be THAT GUY (or GIRL) who runs around chanting how much the OC music rocks, and then can't really say anything about the bands on it. The bands work way too hard to be dismissed like that, and there's a lot of good music to be discovered. Make your own comps. Listen to more good music. Be you.
