Music reviews of Kim Possible (Jewl)

Music Review: A Few "Filler" Songs, But What's Great is Spectacular
Rating: 4 Stars

For quite some time now, Walt Disney Records has had a special eye on the Disney Channel, as the stars of the network's tween programming are groomed as pop singers in addition to actors. Fortunately, the soundtrack for "Kim Possible" - once a huge hit, now slowly vanishing from the public eye - balances out the done-to-death romantic ballads with several throwbacks to the sort of goofy, tow-tapping goodness that marked the Disney Afternoon.

Note: I am reviewing the "New and Kim-proved Edition." I'm not *quite* sure what's here that's not present on the original soundtrack, but I would presume it's the song "Rappin' Drakken," as well as anything and everything from So the Drama.

The songs are as follows:

1. Call Me, Beep Me! (The Kim Possible Song) - Christina Milian
Long before I ever started watching KP regularly, its theme song caught my eye *and* ear. Its insanely catchy lyrics and frantic, we're-off-to-save-the-world beat combine to give your average ten-year-old chills of excitement. And it's a fun experience for anyone older, too.

2. It's Just You - LMT (Used briefly in "A Sitch in Time")
Kim's name seems somewhat thrown into this upbeat, you-can-do-anything song, but boy-band LMT sings well enough. Kids might like to dance to this, but they'll probably prefer the tunes more directly connected to the show.

3. I'm Ready - Angela Michael (Not entirely sure where this one is from; might be "So the Drama")
As my uncertainty about this song's origins suggest, it's somewhat forgettable. Still nowhere close to a painful experience, though.

4. Get Up on Ya Feet - Aaron Carter (From "A Sitch in Time")
The song's creative, surprisingly fitting, use during a scuffle for an important magical object on "A Sitch in Time" adds to its energetic appeal. Be prepared to have this stuck in your head for the rest of the day.

5. Say the Word - Kim Possible (Christy Carlson Romano; from "Hidden Talent")
Kim sings this for the school's talent show and sounds pretty darn good for someone who claims to have difficulty hitting the high notes. Like "Naked Mole Rap", this is an original Ron masterpiece, and while it's not hilarious the way the aforementioned track is, it's a sweet offering that focuses more on Kim's talent for friendship than her world-saving abilities.

6. Celebration - Jump5 (From "Ron Millionaire")
Purists (and parents) may instinctively cry foul at this new-millennium cover of a seventies hit. However, Jump5's remake remains surprisingly faithful to the original, albeit slightly faster and with hints of techno.

7. Could It Be - Christy Carlson Romano (From "So the Drama")
Though less than enthused about "So the Drama" as a whole, I have no complaints about this song. Basically, it's a love song about friends realizing there might be something else to their relationship. A sweet tribute to young love.

8. Summertime Guys - Nikki Cleary (From "The Golden Years")
"Could It Be"'s antithesis, this loud, occasionally obnoxious tune pays homage to those "summertime guys that drive us crazy." In the episode itself, it's enjoyable for its irony (played as Ron attempts, quite unsuccessfully, to flirt for college girls at the beach), but on its own, the best that can be said for it is that it has a good beat.

9. E is for Everybody - Cooler Kids (Briefly featured on "A Sitch in Time")
Intriguing for its whispering, breathless style that still manages to be heard loud and clear. I liked the clip that was featured on "A Sitch in Time," but the whole song gets somewhat annoying by the time it's over.

10. The Naked Mole Rap - Ron Stoppable (Will Friedle) and Rufus (Nancy Cartwright; from "Rappin' Drakken")
Kim's best friend gets a well-deserved few minutes of fame, which he takes full advantage of with a hilarious rap about his pet naked mole rat. Ron hams it up until no one in the room will be left with a straight face, and I never dreamed I'd hear a song that rhymed "solution" with "sensitive constitution." Simply put, it's a classic.

11. Come On, Come On - Smash Mouth (From "Queen Bebe")
There's no real point to this song; just an invitation to have fun and dance. It's somewhat notable for the fact that Smash Mouth actually allowed their likenesses to not only appear in the episode, but be kidnapped by the dangerous robotic Bebes, too. They must be major KP fans! :)

12. Rappin' Drakken - Dr. Drakken (John DiMaggio; from "Rappin' Drakken")
After hearing that people buy brands that are mentioned in rap songs, Kim's arch-nemesis belts out an ode to his aptly-named "Brainwashing Shampoo and Cranium Rinse." Dr. Drakken is one of the show's most amusing characters, and his song is pee-your-pants funny. He doesn't have a bad voice, either.

13. Call Me, Beep Me! (Tony Phillips Remix) - Christina Milian
Though this has a longer running time than the first track, the main difference is that this version has occasional sound bites from the song inserted throughout, most notably an amusingly deep-voiced Ron observing, "That would be *so* cool if it wasn't going to hurt us," and a surprisingly menacing laugh from Drakken. I'm also not sure who Tony Phillips is or why he got to remix the song, but the song remains amazing either way.

14. Call Me, Beep Me! (Movie Mix) - Angela Michael (From "So the Drama")
"So the Drama"'s opening song, like the Disney Channel Movie itself, isn't *bad* by any means, but it comes across an attempt to James-Bond-ify the show rather than let it stand on its own Kim Possible charms. I don't think anyone will mind its inclusion, but most will probably prefer the original.

All in all, this in a fun collection, well suited for fans of the show. Though a few songs don't have much connection to the series, all are catchy, and, frankly, it's worth a buy just to own Ron's and Drakken's amazing raps. None of the songs contain anything inappropriate, but parents of younger children may want to skip some of the more superficial romance songs and stick to kid-pleasers such as "The Naked Mole Rap."
