Music Review: Narrows the Gap Between Old Ears and Young

This collection of favorites, performed by renowned jazz artists, is a treasure. Ella singing, "Old McDonald"? Suddenly repetitions of Old Mac are more tolerable, and my grandchildren hear "real" music, not cutsie, sugar-coated pap. Recently, my 4-year-old grandson and I were hanging out, doing errands, listening to Jazz for Kids in the car. Approaching a deserted tunnel, I rolled down all the windows and cranked the volume. Glancing in the rear-view mirror I saw windblown hair standing straight up, two, small, thumbs-up fists raised high, and an expression of ecstasy on a face I cherish. Emerging from the tunnel, my grandson shouted, "Yes! What a great idea!" I pick-up another grandchild from school (she's 5). Innvariably she says, "Let's listen to the Jazz." I appreciate having music like this to share with my grandchildren - another pivot point for memory building.

The fun songs here are timeless classics that appeal to kids of all ages. By featuring childhood favorites such as "Old McDonald" and "The Muffin Man," both sung by Ella Fitzgerald, as well as more offbeat songs ("Mumbles" by Oscar Peterson featuring Clark Terry), Jazz for Kids makes for a great way to teach youngsters about jazz and swing music as well as some of its most legendary performers.Little ones can sing along with Lionel Hampton's "Rag Mop" and share in the hand claps on "When the Red, Red, Robin Comes Bob, Bob, Bobbin' Along" performed here by Carmen McRae. Their appetites will surely be fueled by Louis Prima's "Yes! We Have No Bananas" and "Potato Chips" from Slim Gaillard and His Baker's Dozen.
