Music Review: It's The Song of the Heart

Watching the movie "Happy Feet," I of course recognized all of the 'old school' songs the minute the music or lyrics were audible: "Boogie Wonderland", "Joker", "Kiss", "I Wish", "Heartbreak Hotel", etc. The entire production number of "I Wish" was especially wonderful. But what made me sit up in my seat and say (out loud in the theater, mind you) "I've gotta buy that soundtrack!" was Prince's "Song of the Heart" as it played over the closing credits.
You may not have to be rich to be my whatever, and you don't have to be a genius to immediately recognize and be enraptured by the sounds of His Royal Badness. The second the vocal begins, you get caught up in the light, amusing yet funky dance feeling of the song. The mixing of character dialogue interspersed throughout the song on the CD allows you to forever retain the feeling and vivid memories of watching this classic movie in the theater.
The soundtrack CD keeps you moving. I frankly did not remember Gia's "Hit Me Up" from the movie, but it fast became my second favorite song on the CD. The rapid-fire rap on "Jump and Move" is as hilarious as it is difficult to follow.
The thing that stands out through this entire soundtrack is the bubbly, sweet, toe-tapping yet un-syrupy feeling you get while listening. Musically, this is not the most challenging or adventurous -- nor deeply moving in the intense sense -- collection of music or musical soundtrack you'll ever hear. But that's neither the point nor the magic here. "Happy Feet" as a music CD is just like the movie: the imperfections do not matter; you are simply left feeling very good about what you've just experienced.
I suppose one of the few people who like this CD more than I is the guy getting the most royalties - Prince. Must be nice to have 2 hit songs on the soundtrack of one of the year's biggest movie hits...

Soundtrack to a comedy adventure--Happy Feet is set deep in Antarctica. Into the land of the Emperor Penguins where each needs a heart song to attract a sould mate, a penguin is born who cannot sing. Our hero Mumble, son of Memphis and Norma Jean, is the worst singer in the world...however, as it happens, he is a brilliant tap dancer!If the producers of the movie Happy Feet had enough foresight, they would have dispatched a CD vendor with batches of this disc to every theater exit sign in America. Outside of Shrek and The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie, few kiddie flicks have fed a need to hear certain songs again as effectively. That's in part because of "Song of the Heart," a suitably frisky Prince number you won't find anywhere else. But it also has something to do with the efforts of some unlikely performers. Who knew Brittany Murphy could sing? "Boogie Wonderland," her cover of the '70s classic, crackles with big-voiced confidence, and "Somebody to Love," another classic cover, claws listeners in by the flipper-ful. Even Robin Williams's typically manic "My Way (a Mi Manera)" isn't without its charms. Nicole Kidman's "Kiss" mashed with Hugh Jackman's "Heartbreak Hotel" may be among the disc's weaker moments, but the grownups will like it that way--with their kind of star wattage, they're already stealing enough shows. And there's plenty to focus on besides them: standouts include Pink's untethered rendition of "Tell Me Something Good," k.d. lang's beautiful Beatles medley "Golden Slumbers/The End," and the Beach Boys' underappreciated gem, "Do It Again." --Tammy La Gorce
