Music Review: "When You Wish Upon a Star..."

Let me begin by unashamedly saying I have always been a big Disney fan. Growing up in the 1960's, I saw all the classic Disney animated films, plus such live action ones as "Darby O'Gill and the Little People", "Babes in Toyland", "Mary Poppins" "That Darn Cat!" "The Monkey's Uncle" and " The Fighting Prince of Donegal". My brothers and I faithfully watched "Disney's Wonderful World of Color", every Sunday night on television, even though it was in black in white for a few years before our parents bought the first color set, and as a little boy myself I used to watch "The Mickey Mouse Club" every afternoon after school. Although, my affinity with Disney films and characters kind of went into hibernation for a while as I hit puberty, it came back full force when I met my wife and became a father.
This CD is an excellent bridge between the two periods, the classic era of the 1930's through the 1960's under Walt Disney's aegis, then the rebirth of the animated films starting with "The Little Mermaid" going through the 1990's ending with "Tarzan" in 1999. The songs are all the original presentations from the films, which make them very special particularly to a Disney connoisseur such as me. The playing order of the songs is grouped accordingly the first ten are from the Disney Renaissance ranging from 1989-1999. My own personal favorites connected with memories from this grouping are: "You've Got a Friend in Me" drawled by it's composer Randy Newman from "Toy Story", that always reminds me of my son as a little boy, and the fun we had playing together, "A Whole New World" lyrically trilled by Brad Kane and Lea Solonga from "Aladdin" which was the first movie my wife and I saw as husband and wife, freshly back from our Hawaiian honeymoon, Angela Lansbury's sweetly tender "Beauty and the Beast" my wife and I as a newly engaged couple took our nieces to this and the African themed chant "The Circle of Life" from "The Lion King", that my wife and I viewed at our first drive- in together when we were expecting our son. Three others from this set that have no particular association with me, but that I very much like are Phil Collins pulsating "Strangers Like Me" from "Tarzan", the quietly contemplative "Reflection" from "Mulan" sung with a crystalline clarity by Lea Salonga and finally the reggae influenced "Kiss the Girl" from "The Little Mermaid" seductively crooned by Samuel E.Wright.
The last ten songs are beloved, classic Disney, the ones we all grew up with, and have our own individual memories linked to them. Some of us are probably able to sing along with them ranging from "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" through "The Jungle Book". The only films missed of the major releases are "Dumbo", "Bambi" and "Alice in Wonderland". Some of the songs that evoke colorful images are: "Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo" sung as Cinderella's fairy godmother flashes her magic wand to create marvels, Peter Pan, Tinker Bell and the Darling children soaring fleetly over nighttime London in "You Can Fly! You Can Fly! You Can Fly!","Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah!" - with that natty animated bludbird perched on Uncle Remus shoulder in "Song of the South", the Seven Dwarfs marching home from their diamond mine singing "Heigh Ho", and the romantic spaghetti and meatball supper shared by Lady and the Tramp while they are serenaded with "Bella Notte". The final song and the jewel in the crown is what has become the quintessential Disney theme song "When You Wish Upon a Star" memorably introduced by the winsome, ingratiating treble of "Jiminy Cricket" aka known as Cliff Edwards from "Pinocchio."
Besides the CD, there is a handsome illustrated booklet with an introduction by film critic and Disney aficionado Leonard Maltin. Each song is presented with a color still from the film with the lyrics printed alongside, with the credits for the composer/lyricist and singer. I highly recommend this series, (there are also a second and third CD) as an introduction to your children or grandchildren. I wish it had been around when my son was little but my wife and I had found other excellent Disney compilations, now out of print, that he had us play over and over in the car. Still, who's kidding who, if you're a Disney kid at heart as I am, it's a treat to revisit the golden memories, and sing along at times. I hope you have the your own good reasons to experience this pleasure as well, and if so you'll want to consider Volumes 2 and 3 as well!
