Music Review: Great stuff!!

I became familiar with "Child of the Promise" when the touring version came to our town, and I had the privilege of singing in the background choir. Though I felt like a star-struck adolescent, it was a hoot to chat backstage with Twila Paris, Steven Curtis Chapman and other Contemporary Christmas Music stars of that caliber.
Because of that experience, I have a relatively positive frame of reference for this album and can't really approach my review objectively. With that in mind, I think that this is a great album, telling the Christmas story through a Broadway musical-esque format. Some of the music is really powerful stuff (and the breadth of styles is rather expansive and impressive). And the lyrics really reflect the miracle of the Christmas story, with many of the words taken directly from the pages of Scripture.
The performers are literally a who's-who of well-known musicians, many from the CCM world (Chapman, Michael W. Smith, Amy Grant, Wayne Watson, etc.) and some from the secular music world (Vince Gill, Richard Marx, Michael Crawford, Donna Summer, etc.). Though some of their voices sound a bit ridiculous singing some of these songs (pop music and Broadway musicals aren't exactly parallel styles), the performances are generally very solid. And though it's fun hearing so many of these familiar voices in such an unfamiliar setting, it is not the artists who really make this album but rather the story itself. Overall, I'm happy to recommend this album to anyone interested in new Christmas music that faithfully tells the Christmas story.
