Music Review: The best "Pagliacci" you'll ever hear!

My previous recommendation for "Pagliacci" was the 1953 recording with de los Angeles, Bjorling, Warren, Merrill and Renato Cellini conducting. Warren was excellent, Bjorling was very good, but de los Angeles was an overly-polite, emotionally restrained Nedda without a trill.
In this 1948 Metropolitan Opera broadcast, we have not good studio sound but somewhat cramped broadcast sound. The Met orchestra and chorus are also not the best, there are a few flubs, which is why I only rated it four stars.
But WHAT singing!! Florence Quartararo, Ramon Vinay, Leonard Warren and Leslie Chabay were all outstanding, musical singers, and the first three were also exceptional vocal actors for that time. Hugh Thompson acquits himself well as Silvio. And this performance strikes sparks! Some listeners are perturbed by Vinay's odd "bari-tenor" voice, but I've always found it very attractive and exciting. And besides, the early stars who sang Canio, Fernando de Lucia and Enrico Caruso, also had very baritonal timbres. So did Richard Tucker, to some extent.
Highly recommended.
