Music reviews of Resident Evil: Music From and Inspired By the Motion PictureMusic Review: A GREAT SOUNDTRACK FOR A GREAT MOVIE 8 OUT OF 10 Rating: 4 StarsResident Evil is one of my favorite movies of all time and on top of the over-the-top action and sexyness of Milla Jovovich, the movie provided a great musical score by Marilyn Manson. This soundtrack is flawed, make no mistake about it, but this CD provides plenty of great songs inspired by the movie and Marilyn Manson's musical score is intact. So I will review each of the tracks.
TRACK 1: Red Queen- This is not a song, it is the voice of the villain Red Queen from the film saying "You're all going to die down here." That's all it says. REVIEW SCORE: N/A
TRACK 2: Artist: Slipknot: My Plague (New Abuse Remix)- I love this song. While I do like the original version more, this is still a great song even in its edited form. It has a great beat, fast-paced speed to it, and it's just so damn awesome. RATING: 9 OUT OF 10
TRACK 3: Artist: Marilyn Manson: The Fight Song (Slipknot Remix)- This song will surely offend anyone overly religious. The song proclaims that God doesn't exist multiple times and the curse words are censored (Which is a load of crap). While I was somewhat bothered by Marilyn Manson's tone about God, I looked past that and was left entertained by this song. It's not a perfect song, but it's still pretty good. RATING: 7.5 OUT OF 10
TRACK 4: Artist: Coal Chamber: Something Told Me- This song is actually pretty good and I liked the beat and overall tone of the song. Very entertaining. RATING: 8 OUT OF 10
TRACK 5: Artist: The Crystal Method: Name of the Game (Clean Name)- This is perhaps the one of the only rap songs I've ever liked. I despise rap music, but a very few select song appeal to me. This is one of them. I didn't like the fact the song was censored and the f-word was cut out because it did cripple the song's overall quality. Still it has a great beat and has interesting lyrics. RATING: 9 OUT OF 10
TRACK 6: Artist: Adema: Everyone- This is a really good song. It has a creepy feel to it and the beat and lyrics are rather good. Not the best song on the CD, but still good. RATING: 8.5 OUT OF 10
TRACK 7: Artist: Fear Factory: Invisible Wounds (The Sulture Mix)- The song has a tone similar to Black Sabbath songs, and like Black Sabbath, it's good. It could have done a little better, but it is good. RATING: 8 OUT OF 10
TRACK 8: Artist: Static-X: Anything But This: I like Static-X music, and this song continues the band's quality death metal music. It's not the best of their songs, but it is certainly good. RATING: 8.25 OUT OF 10
TRACK 9: Artist: Rammstein: Balleluja- I've liked some of the German band's music, but not a whole lot of it. This song is one of the better songs I've heard. The music is a bit creepy and I like the fact they seemed to add a bit of opera singing which makes the song better and more interesting. RATING: 8.5 OUT OF 10
TRACK 10: Artist: Depeche Mode: Dirt- This it the worst song in the entire album. It's boring, the lyrics are uninspired, the singer sounds like he's singing half-asleep and there is little to keep you interested. It's not a terrible song, but it just isn't good to listen to. RATING: 5 OUT OF 10
TRACK 11: Artist: Ill Nino: What Comes Around (Day of the Dead Mix)- This song starts off with a Spanish guitar and then turns to death metal, and that's a good thing because the song is a bit boring in the beginning. It gets good after awhile, but it starts off slow. RATING: 7.75 OUT OF 10
TRACK 12: Artist: Mudvayne: Dig (Everything and Nothing Remix)- I haven't really cared for many of Mudvayne's songs, but this is indeed one of their better songs. It is well-done, has a good beat and rhythm to it, and has good lyrics. RATING: 8 OUT OF 10
TRACK 13: Artist: Method Man: Release Yo' Delf (Prodigy Mix)- No, I did not spell the name of the song incorrectly, that is the actual name. Anyway, not only does this CD contain one rap song I actually liked, but this is the second. It has an interesting beat to it and I did enjoy hearing the lyrics. Though in certain areas it sounded like the singer was starting to lose his voice. RATING: 8 OUT OF 10
TRACK 14: Artist: Saliva: 800- The title is supposed to have a little degree symbol after it, but I couldn't put one there. The song is pretty entertaining in most aspects. Could have been done a little better in certain areas, but it's good nonetheless. RATING: 8.25 OUT OF 10
TRACK 15: Artist: Five Pointe O: The Infinity- This is my second favorite song in the soundtrack. I liked how this song was different from the others. It had a great beat, great lyrics, and a good singer. RATING: 9 OUT OF 10
TRACK 16: The Umbrella Corporation- This is not a song, this is the narrator who talks about the Umbrella Corporation at the beginning of the film. RATING: N/A
TRACK 17: Composer: Marilyn Manson: Resident Evil Main Title Theme: This is the music played at the beginning of the film. It has a really eerie and creepy feel to it, which adds to the atmosphere of the film itself. Great musical score. RATING: 9.25 OUT OF 10
TRACK 18: Composer: Marilyn Manson: Seizure of Power- This is probably the most well-liked musical score of the Resident Evil films. This music comes from the scenes such as the laser grid and the first zombie encounter. A fantastic musical score. RATING: 9.5 OUT OF 10
TRACK 19: Composer: Marilyn Manson: Reunion: This song was played during the film when the group was trying to find their way of the Hive and they encounter even more zombies. Not quite as good as the other musical scores, but still good. RATING: 8.75 OUT OF 10
TRACK 20: Composer: Marilyn Manson: Cleansing- This song was played when the group first encounters the hordes of the undead and the shootouts and action scenes spur from then on. Yet another great musical score. RATING: 9 OUT OF 10.
There you have it, all 20 tracks reviewed. The film was great and so is the soundtrack. It easily surpasses many film soundtracks in overall quality. It is a flawed album, but it's well-worth owning.
THE GOOD: The numerous good songs and musical scores.
THE BAD: The censored songs (This is an album for an R-rated movie, why is it censored?), and Track 10.
