Music reviews of Lost and Found: Shadow the Hedgehog Vocal Trax

Music Review: [3.5] For those who knew Crush 40 had more in them than hair metal and bubblegum, this is the Sonic EP you've been waiting for
Rating: 3 Stars

A good deal of the personality of these Sonic vocal soundtrack EP's comes from the seemingly cryptic subtitles assigned. If "Cuts Unleashed" was resident maestro Jun Senoue's commentary on the importance of getting the Sonic Adventure 2 soundtrack out in unedited form, then maybe "Lost and Found" takes it one step further and actually refers to what was going on inside his band, Crush 40, in the process of recording it.

This is all just speculation, of course. And it's not a Crush 40 album, either, but they do claim the bookends and the highlights. Highlights because now that the mood of the game has changed, Crush 40 manages to shake off the majority of their cock-rocky tendencies while hanging onto their distinctive sound. "I Am (All of Me)" showcases a harsher, more intensive sound, but it doesn't feel like a front. And truth be told, one has to wonder if it wasn't even intentional. Even co-writer and mouthpiece Johnny Gioeli admits that when sitting down to write for this game and their eventual sophomore effort, their "sound had changed", dripping with the implications of the involuntary nature of this metamorphosis. Even when "Never Look Back" sounds like it could have been written by an early-00's Bon Jovi, Jun and John succeed in keeping themselves current equipped with nothing but their own convictions (check out the chilling piano reprise of the disc's opener) and not getting out-nü-metaled by the other acts on this disc without ever sounding as clichéd as a serious nü-metal outfit seems entitled to be these days.

Not that the bands that contribute should be ignored. Magna-Fi toss in the guilty pleasure by-the-numbers melodic hard-rocker "All Hail Shadow", while A2 slide in the dismal but hooky-as-all-hell "Chosen One". Former sci-fi rockers Powerman 5000 supply the disc with "Almost Dead", which finds the group closer to frontman Spider One's big brother Rob Zombie than anything the band has released themselves. But this album is aching for more melody and less grit, and something out of the vein of their own "Free" would have made this a much more solid album, possibly overshadowing the Remix Factory's disappointing eight-bar interlude looped over and over for three and a half minutes. Julien-K show up with "Waking Up", which sounds more in line with their "Death to Analog" demos than Heroes' throw "This Machine", which sounded more like a retooled Orgy idea (even imagining the opening riff conjures up flashes of the "Blue Monday" video).

Combine Julien's synth trip, A2's dreary beacon of light, Powerman's industrial headbanger, and Magna-Fi's emoesque rocker and you've got a cocktail of all different kinds of grim. Almost as if each act had a different vision of the darkness that would end up as the theme of this game. (Which wound up feeling just as inconsistant.) Crush 40 bring the most to the table, though, mainly because as dark as this is, it's still a Sonic (style) game. And there's nothing slow and lumbering about it. They keep the tempo in stride with that and Johnny never sounds like he's giving anything short of 110%.

Those who found Escape from the City, Follow Me and Believe in Myself among the highlights of the Sonic series probably should skip this outing. And with a price tag that ugly, it shouldn't be hard. But for those who always knew Crush 40 had something more interesting lying within them than hair metal and bubblegum, this is likely the Sonic soundtrack you've been waiting for.
