Music Review: Several outstanding tracks and a near-perfect album.

Empires is about as close as we have been to an electro-industrial-ebm masterpiece since the genre was rejuvenated on the European front in the late 1990's by artists such as Apop and Covenant and Stateside by Assemblage 23 among a few others. The entire album is full of catchy beats, creative song structures, and Ronan Harris's distinguished vocals. Empires is expected to remain a genre-defining classic in the forthcoming years; I in fact used to have this CD in constant rotation after purchasing it a few years back. What some non-serious fans may not know about is that there is a sister release, called "Burning Empires" (also dated from 2000) which includes several remixes, a couple of new songs plus the rare vocal version of Saviour. Unfortunately though Burning Empires has been out of print for quite some time now and very difficult to find. One certainly wishes that the record company would take a welcome initiative to release this sister record once again. After 2002's Futureperfect, VNV Nation drifted to a more organic style with their 2005 (Matter + Form) and 2007 (Judgement) albums before resolutely returning this year with "Of Faith, Power and Glory" and re-occupying their upbeat, commercially-accessible Empire-era stance.
