Music Review: Where's Lanois/Eno when you need them?

I have had this album for years on vinyl, and like many of the songs on it. However, I never really liked the album in the way that I like so many other U2 albums. The other day I saw a cd in a bargain bin and figured it would be good to pick this up, as I've been listening to a lot of U2 lately. Looking at the titles, I kept thinking that if I rearranged them, it might be a much more enjoyable listening experience. So I got it home, programmed up the cd, and played it. It was great! I noticed during this process that R/H was produced by Jimmy Iovine, not by Lanois and Eno. Mystery solved, eh? Iovine is probably a great guy to have on your side in the music business, but he really dropped the ball here as producer: Helter Skelter as a leadoff song? That's nuts. Van Dieman's Land cutting off before the end? Ummm, I really want to be nice here, but hey, at least let Edge finish his song, dude. And don't put it as the second song on the cd unless you put the whole thing on there, either! So, it's like this: Take the studio cuts, put them up front, in whatever order you want. Then put the live cuts later, and Presto: Great cd! If you want to make it better, burn some of the songs from the dvd release that are not on the album. Also, some of the b-sides from the singles of the era would be a fine addition. Finally, get a version of Van Diemen's Land which does not fade out, and use that on there too. Now what you have is a recipe for a double cd, or ipod sequence. Lastly, if you get your band signed to a label, and you move out to California, do not have Jimmy Iovine produce your cd, unless, of course you happen to agree with all of his ideas.

Limited edition double LP vinyl pressing of U2's soundtrack to their documentary of the same name. **Please note that this vinyl pressing features 'For Promotional Use Only' printed on the artwork. 2007The ill will that initially greeted Rattle and Hum--the follow-up to the band's massively successful Joshua Tree album--was due in large part to the bloated and self-important feature film that accompanied it, which showed the band as being simultaneously naive and pretentious as it "discovered" America. But as the film mercifully slips from memory, the music has remained, from the furious swirl of "Desire" and a clutch of live hits to insightful musical nods to heroes such as Bob Dylan, John Lennon, and Billie Holiday. Songs like "When Love Comes to Town," a supercharged blues duet with B.B. King, suggests the quartet knew more about America from listening to its music than Phil Joanou's unintentional mockumentary suggested. --Daniel Durchholz
