Music Review: This whole album is lovely and very soothing

This gentle album perfectly achieves what it sets out to do. I never came across another lullaby album that I liked as much; these are truly prayers. When my daughters were young they loved to fall asleep to this, requesting it repeatedly. It has worked better than anything else on occasions when they've been restless or fearful. I've also spent many sweet moments nursing a baby while this ministers the love of the Father to my own tired spirit. Twila has always been a strong songwriter, and she delivers here. Her words are carefully selected to connect with a young child's interests and concerns, and to praise their Maker as loving them completely. She seems to want them to fall asleep with the greatest peace and assurance. I also find her delicate vocal quality lovely. There is something hushed about her tone here, yet strong. Perhaps it is the less-than-usual accompaniment by either instrument or background vocals. Playing this album is like having a very talented sister/friend nearby, singing my child to sleep. I suggest taking advantage of the listening samples to hear each track for yourself. Now I love giving this to expectant women or mothers of young babies.

Twila Paris is very clear about the intent of this release, writing in the CD's liner notes that "this is a lullaby album." You'll find an abundance of sleepy-time melodies and gentle, peaceful harmonies throughout this release. As much as the material is geared toward young minds and hearts, there's also a strong affinity toward mothers as well. Paris weaves her lyrical content around the late-night meditations of many new moms, not to mention the little ones they hold. "My Delight" and "Your Whole Life Long" are especially moving and beautiful ballads. This would be an ideal present for a friend or loved one who's expecting. --Michael LyttleLullabies CDs
