Music Review: Great idea, great music, but not as well done as could be

First, let me note that this is not Kimberly as the login says, but her lazy boyfriend who's logged into her computer (she liked this CD, by the way).

I love Iron Maiden, and I love string quartets (classical ones by Beethoven, etc.). So, I bought this with high hopes. And, it's not bad - I mean, Steve Harris and the boys write great music, with lots of harmony and melody that would translate well. In fact, when I first got into classical, it struck me how much the string quartet (four melody instruments with similar voices) was like the stuff Iron Maiden was doing around Powerslave (where the harmony sections would have two or more guitars and bass playing in a similar context).

Sadly, there's a few things that could've been better. First, as all "tribute" CDs tend to do wrong, they seem to have picked the setlist off of a "greatest hits" collection, rather than done the best choices for the format. My immediate instinct - why not the instrumentals like "Losfer Words" and "Transylvania", as well as the songs with long harmony sections like "The Duelists"? Sadly, the folks responsible for picking the songs did not have the familiarity with the band or independent thought to do so.

Second, there's percussion on it. Now, to me, the only point in covering a song previously recorded by the original songwriter is to MAKE IT DIFFERENT! This is a string quartet CD, no need to add percussion! If the song you're looking at is percussion based, choose another song! It's like those mid-80s "orchestral music of . . . " series that had rock musicians playing along, it defeats the purpose.

Third, and this may be how it sounds when you play Iron Maiden on violins, but some of it sounds kind of bluegrassy! To me, Maiden sounds rather classical already, so it's odd that they would get a bluegrassy sound out of a classical ensemble. Still, this may be the effect of translating blues-based guitar solos onto violin instruments, and not a fault of the musicians.

So, overall, kind of cool if you like Iron Maiden and want to hear their tunes in a new context(or are put off by heavy metal but would be open to their great music in a different format), but it could've been done better.
