Music Review: A Tribe Called Quest Still Represents, Representsents...

Its funny the scarcity of this album in the US. I had gone all these years never hearing it. I ended up snagging on an imports site as a gift for my brother.
Its rather unworthy of the Amazon Essential as rarely do remixes outlive the originals (there are times) but most of these tracks I find myself liking it more because its a nice change rather being better than the original. As mentioned most of these cuts don't sound A Tribe Called Quest, but rather a more European dance vibe which isn't really my thing but it works. I'm surprised there hasn't been a more definitive collection of A Tribe Called Quest's works as there are some official remixes that never made it to albums, even the rarities such as a few like on Oh My God Single. Most of these remixes I hadn't heard ever before and opens up another dimension of A Tribe Called Quest but what I wouldn't give for some new cuts or at least a new Q-Tip album. This is a distant second.
The best summery of this album is encapsulated by its own album title, for The Seasoned Traveller. Causal A Tribe Called Quest fans are better off just buying any out of there original catalogs as this album hardly has the jazzy soundscape of any of ATCQ's original works. For those looking for something off the beaten path with the ATCQ stamp, look no further.

Description of Revised Quest for the Seasoned
12 track 1992 compilation on the Jive label, a remix albumfeaturing 'Bonita Applebum' (12in Why? Edit and Hootie Mix),'I Left My Wallet In El Segundo' (Vampire Mix), 'Can I KickIt?' (Extended Boilerhouse Mix) and more. The full title ofthe album is 'Revised Quest For The Seasoned Traveller'.It's only because A Tribe Called Quest's first two albums--People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm and The Low End Theory--are so filled with great singles that the remixes on Revised Quest for the Seasoned Traveller are essential listening. The songs are freed from the constraints of having to fit into the style of the rest of the album, and Tribe open up the treasure chest: "The Luck of Lucien" gets a Deee-Lite-style disco beat; Norman Cook (a.k.a. Fatboy Slim) recasts "I Left My Wallet in El Segundo" with a tropical flavor; "Public Enemy" gets the dance-floor treatment; and "Can I Kick It?" is paid tribute with some funky new asides. Only the classic posse cut "Scenario"--which feels overcrowded by its newly dense soundscape--fails to improve with the added attention. --Randy Silver
