Music Review: A Lesser Tom Waits Album But With One of His Most Brilliant Songs

I am a huge Tom Waits fan and all too often he seems to be singing about me but I have never been much of a fan of this album and do not listen to anything after Bone Machine (guess I keep getting older while Waits keeps getting younger), however, for $7 this is a no-brainer purchase. Mainly for the song "Lonely". I hear that even today after hundreds of listens and the piano chords rip my heart out of my chest and throw it onto Sunset Blvd where it gets flattened by some pompous a-hole's Mercedes. Five stars for the B-side only. The A-side is mostly just above-average 1970's LA singer-songwriter stuff (and if that is your thing no one can beat Warren Zevon...similar down and out, rock and roll verite world view as Waits but much more orthodox in his approach to the music...if you don't know him check out Warren Zevon...brilliant album). Good but compared to his subsequent albums not so hot.
Hey kids: do you know what A and B sides are? Hint: you can't see your reflection in them.
Description of Closing Time
180 gram pressing of 1973 album. Warner.It starts with a sunrise, it ends with "one star shining," and in between Closing Time contains an honest year's worth (1973, to be exact) of sweet, melodic, vintage Tom Waits--minus some of the vocal growl and thematic grit of his later stuff (but you can see it coming). Waltzes, lullabies, blues, jazz, you name it. Driving songs and drinking songs, even an honest to gosh country tune: "Rosie." There are torchers ("Lonely"), scorchers ("Ice Cream Man"), and back-porch senior citizen love songs ("Martha"): "Those were the days of roses/Poetry and prose, and/Martha, all I had was you and all you had was me." Other standouts are "I Hope That I Don't Fall in Love with You" (guess what--he does!) and "Grapefruit Moon," in which Waits croons: "Every time I hear that melody, something breaks inside."
