Music reviews of P.S.: A Toad Retrospective
Music Review: An excellent look back that spares you the filler.

Toad The Wet Sprocket is an often over-looked alternative rock band that you may or may not have heard of. Each one of their six albums has many great songs, but also some of what I consider to be filler. This collection, however, spares you that filler. Every Toad fan (myself included) probably has a few favorites that don't appear on this album, but I think we can all agree that the songs that are included are really good ones. There are two other Toad compilations available, the 'Super Hits' and 'Playlist' CDs, and while I would recommend the Playlist in addition to P.S. to those looking for great photos and liner notes, P.S. is the best in terms of the music itself. This is the only 'best of' album that not only delivers the hits but also includes new material. This retrospective begins with a new version of P.S., a song about a bartender, but quickly gets into the big hits with the radio-friendly Come Down and a new remix of All I Want, which is my personal favorite Toad song. All I Want features the lyrics "Nothing's so cold as closing heart when all we need is to free the soul". The next song is the radio edit of Something's Always Wrong, which unfortunately is not as long as the full-length version found on the Playlist collection and the album Dulcinea. Oh well. Next comes the upbeat Good Intentions, which you may have heard on the TV show Friends, followed by Crazy Life, one of the best songs from my favorite Toad album, Coil. The track after Crazy Life, however, is from my least favorite Toad album, called Pale, although I must admit that Come Back Down is a very good and very creative song. Next comes Walk On The Ocean, one of Toad's biggest hits, which is a simple song about enjoying the outdoors, followed by Fall Down, one of Toad's heavier songs. After that comes I Will Not Take These Things For Granted, an amazing song about the simple pleasures in life, such as diving into the ocean and singing by the fire. The next song is Way Away, one of the band's earliest and most catchy songs, which is from the debut album Bread And Circus, followed by a non-album version of Jam, which is not a jam-band type of song. The next song is a remix of Hold Her Down, an anti-rape ode which is also the only Toad song ever to use the 'f' word. The last previously released song on this album is Whatever I Fear, followed by two previously unreleased songs called Eyes Open Wide and Silo Lullaby, which bring P.S. to a close. Silo Lullaby is a gentle, yet dark and somewhat disturbing sort of lullaby. It is one of Toad's more daring songs, along with Hold Her Down. In conclusion, P.S. is a great place to start if you are new to Toad The Wet Sprocket. Once you've bought P.S. the only other Toad album I would still recommend is Coil. It's also great for die-hard fans who want to hear the new material on the album. Either way, I highly recommend it.
