Music Review: TLC Prove Their Staying Power
Rating: 4 Stars

TLC had their fair share of positive and negative experiences in the Nineties. The positives includes becoming the most successful R'n'B trio in history, selling millions of copies of their second album "CrazySexyCool," and winning countless awards. The negatives included filing for bankruptcy, T-Boz's medical problems and Lisa setting fire to her boyfriend's mansion and burning it to the ground! The girls took a break and returned, bigger than before, in 1999 with the album "FanMail." This album would either make or break the bank, and luckily went to No.1 all over the world, selling than 6 million copies in America alone. It was one of the most consistent album releases of the year, only dwarfed in sales by the teen pop and Latino explosion from the likes of Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys, Jennifer Lopez and Ricky Martin.

The album opens with "FanMail," the album's title track. This is a very atmospheric number, very futuristic and sounds a little dated seven years later. However, there's some wonderful harmonies at work here and the girl's vocals are very good. "The Vic-E Interpretation - Interlude" is a rather pointless interlude, followed by the amazing "Silly Ho." This song is quite underrated and should have been released as a single. The beat is tight, and the "Woop"-ing vocal loops are very 'street'. The composition is very fast and drives along at a hard pace, with regular breaks and computerised vocal speaky bits. "Whispering Playa - Interlude" is a hilarious interlude that sees Lisa and Chili getting hit on by a sleaze-ball in a club. He is, as popular cultural definition would now have us believe, a 'scrub'. This leads into "No Scrubs" perfectly, easily the most popular song on the album, and possibly the greatest and most successful R'n'B song of all time! This song stormed the charts for the whole year and is still a mainstayer on radios around the world - and probably will be for years to come. The video was awesome and expensive, and Lisa's rap was so hot. It's a shame that the rap version isn't included here. This song changed the world of R'n'B in my opinion. Destiny's Child have spent most of their career copying this style of song - the strong

"I'm Good At Being Bad" is a brilliant song that opens very ballad-like, only to change into a hard-hitting song. The girls attitudes completely alter from virginal and innocent to sexy, raucous babes that sing about what they want in a man - rough and frankly! "If They Knew" is a softer, more gentle song. It explores a relationship that the girl has with a guy who is still seeing another woman. The beat is tight and the vocal delivery is husky and sexy. "I Miss You So Much" is the first real ballad of the album. It's quite good but I think it goes on for a bit and I get a bit bored halfway through. "Unpretty" was the second single from this album, released in the summer of 1999. It's an absolutely amazing song and sends chills down my spine even though I've heard it so many times. The video is so powerful and will have many a lot of people sit up and take notice of what's going on their lives. Love yourself for what you are, and don't try and change yourself for anyone if it doesn't make you happy. "My Life" is a mid-tempo ballad that sounds a bit too much like some of the earlier songs on the album. It's quite good but doesn't hold my attention much. "Shout" is a much better song, with a stronger hook and better lyrics. It's another club-banger that will really get your booty shaking!

"Come On Down" sees the album descending a bit into sickly ballad filler, but I don't mind it. Luckily "Dear Lie" picks things up. This was another single from the album released in late 1999 and did reasonably well upon its release. The video is very good and proves that TLC can do ballads just as good as they can do club songs. "Communicate - Interlude" is rather pointless, but is followed by "Lovesick," a song I like and find an urge to keep listening to over and over! The computerised blips are really great in a song about the woman's ex-boyfriend who left her for another woman. It's quite ironic when you put it next to a song like If They Knew, but whatever. "Automatic" is another really great song and is quite similar to the last one in terms of the actual sound. The beat is quite slow but fast at the same time, you could get your groove on to it definitely. The album closes with "Don't Pull Out On Me Yet," which is another song quite similar to the last too. I like the lyrics on this song, they're quite uplifting and ensure that the album ends on a high note.

OVERALL GRADE: 8/10

All in all I enjoy this album a lot, but I don't think it's as good as CrazySexyCool. I think the girls could have made a slightly better album than this, but it contains some absolute classic R'n'B anthems that everyone in the world knows! So if you're looking to buy a pretty solid R'n'B album that's not just about gangstas and pimps and the bling, then FanMail by TLC would be a pretty safe bet.
