Music Review: A fervent performance, lacking only great soloists

This 1958 recording, originally made for Decca, was the first for Tippett's great anti-war oratorio, A Child of Our Time. A cry of anguish from a pacifist, a document of humanitarian protest against the Nazis, and a banner of hope when it was premiered in 1944, A Child would secure Tippett's reputaiton if he had written nothing else. It's rarely programmed in the U.S. except by visitng British conductors but makes a huge impression whenever it appears.
The idiom is modernist but quite tonal, and the interspersed use of spirituals (Deep River, Go Down Moses among them) is deeply moving. John Pritchard leads a fervent reading that gives nothing away to the composer's own version (now on Naxos) or the Colin Davis on Philips. The sonics are a bit edgy but not distressingly so. Davis had the likes of Jessye Norman and Janet Baker among his soloists; there are no stars here although soprano Elsie Morison and tenor Richard Lewis, much admired in the UK, are very fine. The baritone is woolly and too churchy, the contralto strangely close to sounding like a countertenor, but otherwise the Liverpool forces play and sing with total conviciton--there's not a hint of oratorio stuffiness. I've lived with this performance and loved it for years.
