Music Review: Enough already!

For god's sake, this is too much. Since the TKK's last album of new material, they've released no less than three -- count'em, THREE -- remix projects of varying quality, numerous reissues of past material, and a best of compilation. Now some four years since their last stab at originality, the best they can muster is the release of "Gay Black and Married," an archived project recorded a decade ago. The time has come and gone...long, long gone...for a release of *new* material. Are you listening, TKK?
Maybe I wouldn't be so frustrated with these guys if "Gay Black & Married" was a better disc. While it's not terrible, it is easy to see why it has languished on a shelf for the last ten years: it's just not that good. Coming from a band that loves to confound expectations and frequently reinvents itself with new sounds & styles, this release sadly sounds exactly like you'd expect - retro disco grooves, some fairly tame sexy samples, a repetitive beat, and nothing we haven't heard before. Basically, it's just "Sexplosion!" all over again, only not as good and certainly not as daring.
When they put a little effort into their craft the TKK can be a great and fearlessly creative band (one of my favourites of all time as a matter of fact) and while I don't want to give them a bad review it has to be pointed out that this disc is a lacklustre effort that should have remained on the shelf. Or at least they could have released this project sometime after an album of new material and not on the heels of the recent overdose of remixed and repackaged stuff. Get off your asses, TKK, and remind us why we love you!
