Music reviews of Three Days Grace

Music Review: Were these people really tortured as kids or something?
Rating: 3 Stars

This CD I got just a week and a half ago. I listened to it all the way through first and I discovered that it wasn't what I had hoped, but it was pretty good. I would rather listen to The Rasmus, or Muse, but I think this CD is good as well.

Burn: Not really fond of the 20-some odd second fire and wind beginning, but once the rocking instruments start in and the vocals start up it becomes more of a song and less of a nature-type thing. It is really good and it is a good starter for the CD with the hard rock vocals and the clear instrumentals.

Just Like You: Second song of theirs I heard, second single as well, I believe. Really good. It is like a teen anthem, with people branching away from other people that try to get them to morph into themselves. I think this song is one of my favorites since I can relate most to it since I feel that way sometimes. Adults might not care for it as much, but rebellious teens probably love it.

I Hate Everything About You: Hate is an awfully strong word. But this song is like one big oxymoron with the lyrics, "I hate everything about you, why do I love you?" But I the vocals are very well done in this song and the lyrics are really thought out and very appropriate to a song with the word HATE in the title.

Home: One of my favorites on the whole CD. I has some drug references and it includes recapping probably some kind of scene where people just come home and they don't get along and they yell and scream and hide away from each other. It has some really good climactic-type instrumentals and the lyrics are really great, albeit they are kind of mediocre.

Scared: I love this song. It brings out the fear we can establish in ourselves and how it can grow to knaw at us. It reminds me of a kid staying over at a friend's house and the friend told him a story and it kept him awake. But it also reminds me of the book Darkfall where there are things in the walls and in the room the girl can't see in the prologue. Anyway, it is really good despite the yelling and the loud guitar bits. The drumming is really good and provides great rhythm throughout the whole thing. Kudos, Three Days Grace.

Let You Down: This song is mainly about putting your trust in someone and then being betrayed and (see the title!) let down. It has song great whispery vocals in the beginning but it has some great instrumentals that blend with the voice perfectly toward the middle and end of the song.

Now or Never: Mellow at the beginning, then you get the harder Three Days Grace you got the CD for. Then mellow again. It goes like that throughout the song but it has some better lyrics than some of the other songs. It seems like it has more deep lyrics.

Born Like This: Not really my favorite. It has some yelling in it that I don't like as much. But it is still a good song despite the fact that it isn't as good as some of the other songs on the record. Not my favorite, but it ranks somewhere in the middle. It gets mellow and them a few seconds later he yells, so it is a chaotic song.

Drown: Very nice song with an edgy beginning then some really haunting vocals. Every CD needs a song with lyrics like this, with some apologies and regrets that make you think about your own life. When I first heard it it made me cry because it reminded me of people breaking free to the extremes and being suicidal because of the title Drown. This is probably one of my top three favorites for the CD although it tends to be very ranging with the instrumentals and the yelling-to-whispering vocals.

Wake Up: Really great song with *gasp* acoustic guitar! You don't hear THAT too often in rock. It does have the f-word but it is used correctly in context, so I don't really care. It offends some people, but it helps illustrate the whole theme of the song. I really like the song with the chorus saying, "Wake up, I'm pouding on the door, I'm not the man I was before..." but I keep thinking he will say, "Wake up..." and then something about coffee... anybody waking up?

Take Me Under: Has some great instrumental bits and has some really serious lyrics. It is like the others, mellow and harder, but more mellow throughout the whole thing than the other songs. Has a great melody and it is a great song.

Overrated: For a finale, this was a good choice. It reflects the whole CD the best, with the harder side, the mellow edge, then the all-out nearly-yelling vocals towards the middle. With lyrics that remind me of Burn it tends to prove to be a bit washed out when I listen to it, but it is a good song nonetheless.

As an overall review for the record, it is a good album. The songs all tend to blend together because they all sound about the same because of the lack of difference in the whole thing. This wouldn't be my top choice of a CD buy. I'd get A.F.I. before Three Days Grace, but if you like some harder-yet-mellow rock groups, you'll appreciate Three Days Grace nonetheless.
