Music Review: Not their worst...

I'm a long-time Waterboy/Mike Scott fan & always check out what he's doing. Book of Lightning is certainly stronger than his first solo album, or the horribly-produced & bombastic Rock in a Weary Land, or the super-mellow Universal Hall. There are moments of beauty & grace on BOL, but Scott's problem is that he tries way too hard. He over-ennunciates words, and some of his lyrics are so absurd as to point to a future "comedy" record. "She executed her enchantment, secreted me into her encampment." I don't know or care exactly what this means, but it made me burst out laughing. I think maybe Mike went crazy from over-exposure to the Big Music or the big mushrooms. Still, Crash of Angel Wings, She Tried to Hold Me & You in the Sky are gems despite his attempts to sabotage them with over-the-top imagery and cliches ("She told me I was unrealistic & then she went ballistic"). Everybody Takes a Tumble is a shameless rip-off of Fisherman's Blues. Avoid it.
I recommend their recent live album which has 2 beautiful current songs only available on it. I saw The Waterboys in 1989 & was amazed at their dynamics--whisper to a scream--at the band, the singing & the unreleased classics Mike played solo on piano. If they ever come back to America, I will see them again.
