Music Review: A triumph of will over ability? The only band to make Capt. Beefheart seem ordinary

Dorothy, Betty and Rachel Wiggin of the Shaggs seem not to have had much exposure to guitar based music or pop or rock when they recorded their album Philosophy Of The World. They ignore or are unaware of typical structural cliches found in sixties rock music and seem unfamiliar with the verse-chorus-verse structure of pop music. Drummer Helen Wiggin often sounds as though she wasn't listening to the others while recording. As for guitarists Dot and Betty they can't really play their instruments well, and their singing is at best odd, at least concerning harmony, melody and rhythm;-) By ordinary standards The Shaggs are horrible. But despite their ineptness, and naivete, they keep it together. Instead of following popular musical trends or compositional cliches, they invent their own unique structures and that's what makes their incredibly odd and "wrong" music so compelling. Honestly, nothing like this was done before in rock music before or since with the exception of Capt. Beefheart. Unlike Beefheart though the Wiggins are true outsiders. Beefheart was essentially deconstructing the blues and his musicians were trained and well aware of what they were doing, the Wiggins sisters are complete innocents. There are no intellectual underpinnings to the Shaggs sound. They play the way they do because that's the way they play, and their lyrics have a sweetness and honesty about them that unselfconsciously come from their teenage hearts. I've often wondered if Zappa or Beefheart heard this recording before Beefheart wrote his Trout Mask Replica album. It would certainly explain a lot. The Shaggs are a triumph of will or is it imagination? over ability.

When listening to the Shaggs (the Wiggin sisters--Dorothy on lead guitar and vocals, Betty on rhythm guitar and vocals, Helen on drums), one needs to jettison conventional notions of song structure, what is "in tune" or not, even what constitutes suitable subject matter for a pop song ("My Pal Foot Foot," "Who Are Parents?"). Originally issued on a small, dodgy label in 1969, the guileless sounds of Philosophy cast a long shadow nonetheless; the group was one of Frank Zappa's favorites and their music inspired rock primitivists Beat Happening as well as sublime archivists NRBQ and Yo La Tengo. On Philosophy, the teenaged sisters' delirious, playfully constructed music has everything you least expect: loopy polyrhythms that follow no external law, off-kilter singing conducted in unison that sounds like the hit parade broadcast from Jupiter, and bizarre, elementary-school guitar playing. Best enjoyed in small doses, this enchanting, accidental music approximates the highly personal charms of so-called "outsider" visual art. To paraphrase a saccharine song of yore, the Shaggs' music is very beautiful--in its own way. --Mike McGonigal
