Music Review: Thundering, Electro, Dance Brilliance

The Presets make a strong argument for total world domination with their thundering Apocalypso. They have built a massive, grand, sound that threatens to engulf everything in it's path. Bigger, bolder and unquestionably better than Beams, you are now witnessing The Presets in 3-D. Channeling vintage Depeche Mode, industrial dance beats and hipster flair - you need to ask yourself - am I ready for this? "My People" is a devastating steamroller of a dance song, delivering pounding bass and heavy chainsaw synths that threaten to drill themselves into your head permanently - not to mention Julian Hamilton's towering vocal trademark. "A New Sky" continues the dance stranglehold but is in fact just prepping you for what is to come. This is about the point you realize they are just getting started. "This Boy's In Love" makes a claim for the greatest dance song of the year - from the soaring heavy hitting vocals, to the stuttered laser beam synth attacks, to the throbbing beat. They push everything as far as possible without going over the top - exemplifying everything that is good about their sound, in a glittering, exploding disco ball of twenty-first century timelessness. "If I Know You" is one of the slower but no less great moments on the album, showcasing the versatility and depth of their music. "Anywhere" is as close as they come to sounding like a normal electronic act, drawing their sound out but not in. Apocalypso is gritty, raw, and dark at times, but this is exceptionally refined grunginess. There is a pure, driving, intensity that comes across in their best moments. It is through this commanding, boldness that The Presets shine at their brightest.
