Music Review: This is it

That says it all. I saw the Modern Lovers in the first itteration at Gloucester High School up on the North Shore where I was at school at the time. They opened for Orleans and the differences could not be any more striking: Orleans were slick and had great equipment, I think Jerry Harrison had a folded up match book underneath one of the front pads on his Fender Rhodes. (I believe it was a Rhodes- could be wrong, but hey) They opened up for them and played the most affecting music I ever heard. Strange? ... quirky? ... odd? ...: in order, Yes, unquestionably and you betcha. They played well, although it was at the time where the rest of the band wanted to wring Jonathan's neck for stepping on the release of the record. Nevetheless, we heard them and decided that it was time to leave, despite the obvious social advantages to be sought with the girls from GHS. We got on to Route 1 and started beetling back to Byfield when we stopped off at the Agawam Diner for a coffee and a smoke. About four of us sat there not knowing what to say when one of the guys ... I think it was DB said "Man that was history ... wierd history, but history." Not one voice was raised in oposition. When I got them back to school - not one of them stoned, as was our wont in those days at those events - I turned and left to drive home when I turned on the radio, and it all made sense. We had seen history, history that was beyond description. When I picked up the vinyl in I believe 1977 or 8, I KNEW WE HAD SEEN HISTORY, PERIOD.
The beauty of this is that it speaks .. I mean really speaks ... to teenaged angst in a gutteral and primal way that is hard to replicate. Only one other record that I have heard does the same thing for me: Philosophy of the World by The Shaggs. That one was interesting: this one was compelling. But what's more, their performance with all that used equipment, made me realize that you should appreciate what you have and that the newest and shiniest is not always the best. It is more important to put yourself into your work and not depend on technology to do the work for you. Or as my father would say, "A poor craftsman blames his tools."
