Music Review: Juliana Theory's closest thing to a magnum opus

It's been some time since The Juliana Theory broke up, and even longer since the first time I picked this up after hearing "Is Patience Still Waiting." I was never one for emo, and it's the reason I didn't really like their first album, Understand This Is A Dream (aside from one or two songs).
Emotion is Dead is different. It still holds a few trappings of emoness, but for the most part it sounds like a band outgrowing their genre and broadening their sound. And for the most part, it works. The album has a different sound for each song, but all share a pop sensibility that's easy on the ears at times, and rocks faces off at other moments. Highlights include the jangly "We're At The Top Of The World," power-pop/emo flavored "Is Patience Still Waiting" and "If I Told You This Was Killing Me, Would You Stop," and the softer ballad "This Is Your Life."
This theme of varying and broadening their sound picks up strength and finishes strong in the last two songs: The arena rock-influenced "You Always Say Goodnight," and the techno instrumental "Emotion is Dead Pt. 2." What starts off as a bittersweet ballad segues into a full-volume guitar solo and instrumental, and finally, the house beats of "Emotion." It's a wonder that these guys never got enough mainstream airplay, and even though they were signed (and subsequently let go) by major label Epic, they were never able to match the strength of this album, sonically.
