Music Review: J 5 Grows Up

Back when dinosaurs roamed the earth, not only way before Michael Jackson turned into a one-man freak show, but even before THRILLER, when it was widely considered that Michael Jackson was the #1 entertainer on earth, the Jacksons were a family act - eldest brothers Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, Marlon and Michael came to national prominence as the Jackson 5. (The Jacksons eventually included La Toya, Randy and Janet, decades before wardrobe malfunctions.)
The J5 were initially signed with famous Motown, marketed as the discoveries of the supreme Diana Ross. They had enviable afros, slick twirling choreography, and a little boy with a voice like a song bird.
After several years they left Motown (who kept Jermaine, who was married to Motown head Berry Gordy, and the name "Jackson 5"). A couple of recordings with CBS didn't go far. A new branch, Epic, sprung from the CBS tree, the Jackson brothers wrestled artistic control from the suits, and "Destiny" is the result.
Still in the midst of the disco era, clubs and radios were soon being shaken down to the ground by "Blame it on the Boogie", "Things I Do For You", and their first Top 10 single: "Shake Your Body (Down to the Ground).
This was the album that announced to most of the world that the baby-faced Jackson 5 had grown up, and the baby-faced Michael was turning into a sensation destined to win 13 Grammies and sell 750 million records. It was not long after this that Michael teamed with Quincy Jones. The two met during the production of the film "The Wiz", starring Michael (as the scarecrow) and his life-long benefactor Diana Ross as Dorothy. Mr. Jones produced the music for the film and after discussions the next thing the world knew, "Off The Wall" and "Thriller" were making music history.
