Music Review: good and a half

This is the first music the Electric Flag did, for the soundtrack to The Trip--Peter Fonda drops acid to find himself and does, back where he started.
Some of the music on here is amazing: "Peter's Trip" is amazingly exotic fanfare. I don't even know how to classify the mix of guitar and oriental tones. It is one of those astounding pieces of music made in 1967 when no one knew what psychadelia was supposed to sound like yet: musicians like Flag could arrive at fresh juxtapositions. It sounds like somethig from Basil Kirchan's Abstractions of the Industrial North
"The Hobbit" also has great trumpet working against an organ. It is midevil jazz. There is even early use of moog synthasizer on the lovemaking track
But there is too much "soundtrack" music like "psychie soap" and the mary-go-round theme that may fit the film but is completely unimaginative. As evidenced by the other tracks raved about above, this work does not need to be here and is a waste of the Flag's time.
They could have dreamt up far better for these parts of the movie.
For some reason, this soundtrack has parts missing from the origional 1967 album, and deserves a proper reissue. Be warned and listen to samples before buying as you might not get the tracks you want.
