Music reviews of Calculating Infinity

Music Review: ...calculating the infinite point at which this album stops attacking...
Rating: 5 Stars

...Dillinger Escape Plan for me will always have a place close to my heart...I ironically discovered about them in an article in a prog magazine about being hardcore that didn't want to be tied down to fixed time signatures...I heard a few of their demo/ep stuff and was surprised...it was heavier and more intense then I had expected...but it wasn't a bad surprise as I realised...this was probably the most complex piece of hardcore music I had ever heard...the constant change to the ostinato...the stop and go time shifts...the metaphorical lyrics...it all worked well and lead me to other bands of this supposed "mathcore" genre from the Jazzily and aggressive complex Petitioning the Empty Sky by Converge to the much the over dramatic Nintendo referenced R. Borlax by HORSE the band...every part of mathcore was a new chapter for me...but of course...I always come back to this...taking what meshuggah did and shoving it in a blender...shooting all over the place...no solos to be exact...just constant hard hitting ideas...

Sugar Coated Sour 10/10: Starting with a fast squealy guitar it then explodes into t threshold of intense drumming and quick power chords...constantly switching to a very quick twelve note scale...the guitars are all over the place and I love it...the singing brings a much more percussive feel to it...while the rest of the instruments change most of the time the vocals remain constantly harsh and insisting...an amazing yet somewhat unforgiving introduction...

43% Burnt 10/10: The most famous track off of the album...is it just as hard hitting? Definitely...they manage to soar through a lot of different time signatures and guitar timbre going from clean electric guitar tones to very broken acoustic...there's even a nice jazzy instrumental interlude near the end...unlike most albums the music here is a lot more harder to analyze due to the manner of the songs...of course the structure is arch-form from what I can hear...the jazzy interlude being the tip of the arch...

Jim Fear 10/10: Carrying on the trend from the other tracks starting with a complex drum rhythm...it never seems to the stay the same for more than about ten seconds...the guitars play rather dissonant power chords every now and then playing broken chords and what could be seen as a solo...if you count twiddling around the scale a solo...I do...

_#.. 10/10: Edging to a more quiet intro now...which I'm sure would surprise many people...but the suspense created by the quiet in such an intense album is enough to get your heart racing...you don't know when they're suddenly going to hit you again...but you wait...as the drums and guitar enters very quietly still retaining their dissonant complexity mysticism...they gradually get more and more and more aggressive...baring their teeth to reveal the next track...

Destros Secret 10/10: Entering with a full on assault that doesn't seem to give up...the reason these tracks are so enchanting is because the rhythm is all over the place...you'll always get something new out of it every time you listen...the guitars then enter a more acoustic line until returning back to subject 1...entering in and out of this while the singer says "Scratch out my eyes"...it's just...all over the place...just...wow...

The Running Board 10/10: Starting yet again with craziness...it then morphs into a very very dark quiet track...that slowly gets back onto its hind legs not surrendering and continuing to fight...like the other tracks...all over the place...that's the good thing about this album...there is no stand out track because every track equals the same in complexity...

Clip the Apex...Accept Instruction 10/10: More crazy time signatures...crazy squeaky guitars that transform into a more structured power chord filled riff then eventually returning to the opening ritornello...all over the place yet again...there's no need to describe the tracks...very simply this whole track is filled with different sub-sections that conjunct together to create small and fast flurries of musical epilepsy (spell check)...

Calculating Infinity 10/10: Entering more casually than usual...no intensity...yet...they remain more melodic at this point staying in minor keys playing calm acoustic numbers...ironically the guitars are always more melodic than the vocals (well it's not that ironic but still)...good instrumental track...

4th Grade Dropout 9/10: The only beef with this song I have is I heard a split ep version of this song before hand and it sounded much better...the vocals were more grouped and the guitars were higher up in the mix...of course this doesn't stop the song from being amazing...but it just kind of irritates me because they should have kept the original...intense and has an eerie calm part near to the middle...yet again ends with the opening ritornello...

Weekend Sex Change 10/10: A dark and droned intro with the drums drumming everywhere...the guitars calm and evilly (word check) acoustic...a synthesiser then appears and drones on for a quite a while...random child voices can be heard...with people very quietly screaming...the whole sound then suddenly bursts into action...the drums are really frantic and yet the whole atmosphere is still dark and bare...probably the best instrumental track on the album...

Variations on a cocktail dress 10/10: Ah yes...the finale track...is it a good finale? Well it doesn't give in if that's what you're saying...retaining the spirit of the earlier tracks it goes on a massive frenzy of different time signatures and awkward hybrid key signatures...near to the middle of the track it eventually turns to silence for a while...it then gradually builds up with random quotes backed with some evil calm wind...it's an interesting ending...and concludes it in a rather miscellaneous fashion...

...if in any shape or form you enjoy music that will get your brain thinking sprawled all over the place...or you're just one of those people that like music that makes the body shake involuntarily in awkward ways...then by this...

BE WARNED: Not for people that dislike aggressive music as every track does in some ways follow a linear formula making strategy...also not for Meshuggah purists or people who feel that music is something that should make you feel all the time or it's meaningless...
