Music Review: I was practically raised on this music

yes I was.
I was about raised on it. the 'children's medley' most of all.
now when *I* was young, I heard the violence and was horrified. but now I hear the humor, the parody, and irony in it. and there's nothing like a pennywhistle either.....
"when I was young, I had no sense
I bought a fiddle for 18 pence
the only tune that I could play
was over the hills and very far away.
so early in the morning, so early in the morning, so early in the morning, before the break of day......"
I have been a late bloomer and so I take inspiration from the 'ethnic folk' rendition of the wran song.
'they never made any money of course....but they ended up in Carnegie Hall.'
and that's a joke that could be heard to indicate that success is what you make of your life, or that is how I choose to hear it now.
and there is that song they used to sing about the sea....
and then there is my favorite.
'wallflowers, wallflowers, growing up so high
he had the measles I'll never never die..
call to Paddy Clancy's house
he has no relations
he may tick and tack and turn his back
and kiss the congration...'
well I have relations (ahem!) but I always kinda did want to get up there on the altar, like when I was lectoring, and then turn around and just....walk...off.
or something like that :)
then there is the drinking song where the priests are drinking. the juice of the barley. and the child is accused of drunkenness by the priest at Mass. that is a formidable fear, I will tell you. not drunkenness per se, but the priest LOOKING at you. ahem.
'you'll dance a fine jig between heaven and hell
and his words they did fright me the truth for to tell.'
and he goes down to take the pledge and there they were, the priests.
'at the learning I wasn't such a genius, I'm thinking.
but I soon beat the master entirely at drinking.'
that was not me but *ahem* school was less than lovely.
then there is the 'sad verse.'
and then there is the parting glass. I am working at giving up some bad habits and lightening up and listening to this song helps.
I started listening to this again about six months ago when early childhood memories came back to me for the first time in a long time. I still really like it. in fact I still feel about 11 and sitting on the floor or at the dinner table, listening to it.
it is like being a child all over again, but better this time. I don't have to go to school OR church. and I have given up the ghost on bad jobs as well. I think I'm pretty fortunate.
giving up work is supposed to be terrible but in fact I feel very lucky. relieved at giving up tasks I did not do well, that hurt me.
