Music Review: No matter which version, it's just awful

I agree with others who've called this a huge disappointment compared to earlier Cars albums. Let's start with the title -- how much dreck oozes from a title like "Heartbeat City"? And the lyrics? "Summer, summer, summer, summer, it turns me upside down"? Like it was written by a 6 y.o. And the sound is just generic synth. I think the reviewer who suggested that they were older and just not that into it anymore probably hit the nail on the head; I think there's probably more energy and a hint of desperation in a band's earlier works that goes out the window when they've made it and aren't dependent on the next gig to make rent. Anyway, this album can't hold a candle to Cars or Candy-O.

Buddy Holly-meets-Roxy Music was the hook-filled formula Ric Ocasek and crew fell into on their classic 1978 debut--and it's one they continued to milk throughout the first half of the '80s. As in any formula, it seemed to dilute a bit with each subsequent release. Heartbeat City, however, saw the Cars shaking things up a bit and scoring three hit singles in the process. "You Might Think" does have that same old Cars pop sound, but "Magic" and especially "Drive" sound unlike anything the Boston band had previously recorded. The album proved to be a rebirth of sorts...as well as a final hurrah. Following their Greatest Hits package, the Cars would fade away following 1987's Door to Door. --Bill Holdship
