Music Review: Walking with Strangers Not So Strange

What to make of this band and its 2007 release, "Walking with Strangers?" Are they goth? Are they dance electronica? Are they pop? Though on the whole the music is all pleasant enough, it lacks an identity and sense of personality. I'd tag it as gothtronica and move on but it tries to be scare your little kids industrial in places, odd. Lead singer Chibi's voice is all pristine in its higher register filtering through purple ethers but it lacks punch and pizzaz. So what could be quite interesting doesn't catch or grab with The Birthday Massacre, at least on this album.
In gothtronica much like the sounds of Amy Lee and Evanescence, who precedes The Birthday Massacre in success, the female vamp lead voice soars above the chunky guitars, swirling synth keyboards, and programmed drum beats. Listening through "Walking with Strangers," its all enjoyable in parts but doesn't really leave you with any meat or substance to get excited about. These are tame tame vampires, children of the night as long as the night is well lit in interior mall lights in a suburb near you.
In track 5, "Red Stars," Chibi intones, "This isn't personal, we are all dancing to the same sad song." And you want to say good for you little goth kids, your trying to do something about your surburbia mall angst, you want people to dance. Well, that's a place to start but don't the kids need some music with passion and gusto to do all that white ashed faced, black lipstick lined dancing to?
The title track numero 10, "Walking With Strangers," gives a little more hope of what may be to come with the B-day killers. It has dance floor bounce, cool snarling guitars, and singer Chibi lets go of that voice and gives it personality. Here's the soundtrack to your lives mall goth rats across the U.S. Hopefully there's more of that to come but when it comes to dance floor goth, you may want to steer elsewhere to get the goods, at least for now. --mmw
