Music Review: A various program

If Jazz is a spirit this album from Terri Lynn has it. And I'd add that it has the spirit of Jazz in its most deep form, trascending genres and various orchestrations. The spiriti of playing good, deep music, with technique, dedication, passion and love for it. This cd isn't that bad as the first reviewer has said. It is neither something essential absolutly, it's not. It stay there in the middle, it is something played by a very talented group of musicians, Terri Lynn in primis, there's some good Jazz in this record but the program is not that coherent and some choices are not the best. you can surely enjoy it, but it's not that you absolutly have to own in the Jazz category. It's not a full mature effort in my opinion from an artistic point of view even if I repeat there's some good music inside this album, but it's here and there a little bit confused among minor things (drum solos and other things). I think 3 stars and a half could be a right rating (I give four to let the ratign goes at the right level). The musicianship is very high throughout (Terri Lynn, Hancock, Gary Thomas, Kevin Eubanks etc) some tunes are fine (in the late sixties Jazz mood like Lttle jump, Giggle etc), some are less interesting (there are some keyboards and synth arrangements here and there). I had the opportunity to buy this one for few bucks because it was in promotion in my cd store and for the money it is surely a good cd. Nothing unlosable from a compositional standpoint (all the tunes are written by Terri Lynn) but in the end music from some great talented musicians. As a drummer Terri Lynn is very talented, his drumming is powerful, energetic, sophisticated. She deserves attention in the future even if this release is not the one I was expecting from her.
Description of Jazz Is a Spirit
In the 1980s, drummer Terri Lyne Carrington was the darling of the so-called young lions generation of jazz musicians. She gigged with everybody from Woody Shaw and Wayne Shorter to Greg Osby. But after the release of her 1989 Grammy-nominated debut, Real Life Story, and her short stint on the Arsenio Hall Show, it's been more than a decade since she released her long-awaited follow-up.This CD is well worth the wait. Carrington is joined by a number of jazz greats--pianist Herbie Hancock, saxophonist Gary Thomas, guitarists Kevin Eubanks and Paul Bollenback, and trumpeters Wallace Roney and Terence Blanchard. Stylistically, Carrington's drumming is a brilliant blend of Tony Williams's power, Billy Higgins's finesse, and Elvin Jones's African syncopations. She knows that she does not need to blow everybody away with loud solos, so she leads by driving her band mates. She wrote most of the music, which has a '60s, Miles Davis feel. "Jazz Is" is a spectral opus featuring actor Malcolm Jamal Warner on spoken word and bass. "Lost Star" swings with a Live at the Plugged Nickel vibe, while her take on Wayne Shorter's classic "Witch Hunt" is a melodically recombinant version for this century. The most evocative pieces are the Afro-Eurasian tinged "Journey of Now" and "Mr. Jo Jones," a deathbed interview with the legendary drummer Philly Joe Jones passing his advice and his torch to Carrington while she "talks" to him with her poetic and polyrhythmic drumming. --Eugene Holley Jr.
