Music Review: A Breath Of Fresh Air!

So after all the hype (and believe me over on this side of the Atlantic anyway there's been lots!!),The Strokes have finally released their debut album.I've had the c.d. for 3 weeks now and I have to say the hype is well deserved.11 tracks,36 minutes of the freshest sounds to be heard this year.Fresh only in comparison to the prog/rock or acoustic influences I've heard from many new acts this year.It isn't fresh when you consider that this music has been lifted so directly from the new wave sound that was heard in New York during the beginnings of groups such as Blondie and Telelvision.The production sounds quite crude and deliberately raw.No fancy effects what so ever-just straight guitars,bass,drums and vocals-I suppose this is what makes it sound so fresh.This c.d. is packed with an attitude last heard on the first Oasis c.d.
Each song is so simple-no complicated guitar chords,no long solo's of any kind.They breeze in and out of your stereo before you know it.Yet they all have enough quality that after a couple of listens each one is very memorable.Each one has the simple structure of verse-chorus,verse-chorus.Each song is fast,to the point-they never meander around with long build ups at all.Drums establish up-tempo pattern,rhythm guitars similar to early Smiths,followed by lead guitar.The vocals of Julian Casablancas hark back to a music long considered deceased.My only fault would be that each song at first sounds so similar to each other.This is the sort of album that you'll probably like instantly or just never get into at all.Yet I'm sure perseverance would pay off for most listeners.My own favourites are the amazing 'Hard To Explain'-rumour has it that they were signed after some exec. heard half of this song.Not since New Order's 'Blue Monday'have we heard a song with such an incredible break.'New York City Cops' is a highlight also and has a very memorable chorus,but which under the current circumstances may appear to be very insensitive.'Last Night' mixes Motown rhtyhms with cutting edge rock sound.'Trying Your Luck' is as soft as it gets and almost sounds like they've become all shy and suddenly lyrically less brash lacking in the self-confidence heard in all the earlier tracks.
Where they go from here it's hard to tell?But there can be no doubt that this is the sort of album that will be still talked about in 20 years time when this certain cycle of music no doubts gets repeated.
