Music Review: Brilliant Concerto by Robet Ward

American composer Robert Ward's Concerto for Piano and Orchestra is absolutely gorgeous! The piano accompaniment is absolutely brilliant. The concerto begins with a melody played by an English horn and accompanied by strings creating a lyrical mood. The piano repeats the melody and the piece becomes more elaborate. There are two movements and some repetition of very strong themes. The second movement reflects the composers lively WWII experiences as a band leader. I particularly like the work of Robert Ward, a true American treasure. His Symphonies 2 and 3 also are beautiful. Have listened to the CD again and again -- it is that beautiful. I was fortunate to hear the concerto performed in March 2009 by the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra and it was breath taking and very well received by the audience. Robert Ward, now 92, was present during the performance and was charming with his stories of studying with Hindemith and calling Irving Berlin, William Strickland and Aaron Copeland by first names. Stunning performance.
