Music Review: A good sophomore album, but not without it's faults.

I had extremely high hopes for Streetlight's second original effort as I felt that Everything Goes Numb and Keasbey Nights had been flawless, and I must admit that upon first listen I was incredibly disappointed. The songs ran together and seemed to be nothing more than technically fleshed out versions of songs from the Kalnoky catalog, and it just didn't work for me. I discarded it for a while until the Chicago tour date was looming, at which point I decided to give it another shot--and I'm glad I did.
While my initial judgment may have been clouded by my love for Streetlight's previous releases, some of my gripes with the album still linger. No doubt the record has some great tracks--Down, Down, Down to Mephisto's Cafe, One Foot on the Gas, One Foot in the Grave, The Receiving End of it All, and What A Wicked Gang Are We have become some of my favorite tracks by the band, at least musically. There are some other tracks good tracks as well, but the real issue lies with the ones which don't quite reach that level. Would You Be Impressed?, Watch It Crash, and Forty Days really drag this album down in my opinion, especially given their placement. Early on I would have trouble even getting through the album because I would become so bored with them. They have since become more tolerable, but I still will skip them occasionally depending on my hurry.
Additionally, the songs on this album are simply too long--even the ones which I love the most can get tiresome by the end. Part of what made EGN so great was the energy and passion, and I think that save The Receiving End of it All, many tracks lose this to some extent due to the increase in length. You can only dazzle us with technical prowess for so long before the effect dulls.
Another issue is the lyrics, while not a huge deal there are some real stinkers throughout the album which really keep some great tracks from being impeccable. Listing a bunch of examples would probably become tedious, so I'll just present the most offensive one. Unfortunately, it is in my favorite song on the album, The Receiving End of it All (which may have been evident by now). The line in question goes something like "We used to be in love, but now were just in like; and we broke all our promises and baby that ain't right." It makes me cringe every time, it sounds like it should have come out of some cheesy country ballad. Not that I feel Kalnoky's lyrics are particularly amazing to begin with, but it's lines like this that really bring them down a notch.
In short, good musicians and some really standout tracks, but a couple alterations could have vastly improved the record. If Amazon let me, I would have given it 3.5/5.
