Music Review: Another consistent release from Strato...

This release from Stratovarius is quite good and expands (just a little bit) over Visions, their prior release. The guitars and production seems to be much heavier and tighter on this release that is any of the others up to this point. The production is very slick and the most commercial release to this point. As always, all members are in perfect form and Timo does a great job of writing the songs again. Every element of Strato is here: blazing guitar solos, great keyboard solos, great vocals and pounding drums. Here is a track listing:
1. Hunting High and Low - Great song; very powerful guitars, drums and vocals. The meter reminds me of S.O.S. from Visions, but a little slower.
2. Millenium - this songs is typical fast Strato, but does not do much for me, but it is fast.
3. Mother Gaia - This is a slow song and works pretty well. Shows versatility in TK's lead vocals.
4. Phoenix - one of my fav songs on the album. I love the drum work and how everything goes together, especially in the chorus. The lyrics are good too and provide positivity, if maybe a little vague. Overall a great song.
5. Glory of the World - another ok song. It is fast and has a great keyboard line in the beginning and the chorus is good too. It just doesn't do much for me.
6. A Million Light Years Away - probably my favorite on the album. Very commercial sound and format. This song should have easily been on USA radio in many markets. This is a great song and very catchy.
7. Freedom - This is a neat song too; very fast and very anthemic. The solo area is especially neat as it features both TT and JJ trading off guitar and keyboard solos. That is always fun to hear. Again, the lyrics are the typical 'let's live right, I'm taking over my destiny and being free' type of positivity, but they work. This band has, to me anyway, really been about the music and their technical ability. These guys play their instruments so well, it alsmost seems as though the vocals take a back seat, but somehow, they also rise up, even again, if the lyrics are a little vague in their positivity.
8. Infinity - this is another favorite. I love the slow cadence of the song, it always seems to sound heavier to me when this happens. Anyone can play full speed, but to control it like this and make it heavy is really neat. The keyboards really add a lot to this song. I especially like the end. This song, to me, seems to be a precursor of the thematic type stuff that would appear on Elements I and II. I really like that type of stuff when they do it. They manage to tell a multi-song type story, but each song certainly stands on its own.
9. Celestial Dream - this is a neat song too, but way too short. It features TT on acoustic guitar and JJ working on neat string parts and orchestrations. It is a neat way to end an album, but I think that the song could have been longer.
Overall, this is a good album. It, to me, seems to the be the most commercial they did up to that point and they really were getting noticed at this point. Too bad that did not happen much sooner, because almost all of their music is great. Case in point, I did not know they even existed until 2000 when I stumbled on a website created by a guy who was reviewing all of his 4,000+ albums. I stumbled on Stratovarius and decided to download a sample. I was blown away and that is when I starting grabbing the albums.
If you want true musicality in a band and good, solid metal that is melodic and very well produced, check them out. They certainly do not fit into the 'cookie monster on crack' style.
