Music Review: Not "All Things New"

Prime Cuts: Angels Wish, I Believe in You, Treasure of Jesus
With over 9 million albums sold and 41 Christian number 1 hits, Chapman's impact on contemporary Christian music is moot. Likened at times to a Christianized version of Bryan Adams, this Kentucky native's 70s-style light rock has certainly left its indelible mark on the Christian musical landscape with momentous hits like "Heaven in the Real World," "For the Sake of the Call," "The Great Adventure," "Speechless" and even last year's most interesting cover of the Proclaimers, "(I'm Gonna Be) 500 Miles." Sticking to the old adage, if it ain't broke, don't fix it, "All Things New" continue Chapman's winsome formula of expressive singing, well-turned originals, and some exemplary guitar picking backed by a tight rock-edged production.
But here also lies the problem. Perhaps due to fatigue and/or the pressure of having to churn out perennial albums, unlike his other albums, none of the uptempo songs really excel. They are by no means inferior, but with the avalanche of other pop slanted ventures such as MercyMe, PlusOne, FFH, Chapman offers little in terms of distinction. Songs such as "Believe Me Now," "Last Day on Earth," "Only Getting Started," "Please Only You," while they deal with Biblically sound doctrines, are melody wise pallid and production wise congested. Further, with the first 9 tracks being high energy pop flavored similar-sounding rockers it is easy to get tired from listening to this CD.
Nevertheless, this does not mean that there are no finer moments in "All Things New." Introduced by some delightful piano playing, lead single "All Things New" builds up to a percolating number about the restorative work of Christ. While follow up single "Much of You," an orchestra-infused rocker, is one of Chapman's most Christ-centered song Chapman has ever written. Reminding us that we live not for ourselves, but for God, the acoustic-sounding "Big Story" is insatiable. While the socially conscious "What Now" finds Chapman challenging us to take care of the disadvantaged for they contain the face of Christ.
It certainly beats me, but the ballads are all lump together towards the tail end of the album. The ballads, in my opinion, are where Chapman surmounts. While most of the songs here are God-centered, "I Believe in You" celebrates the paternal bond of an earthly father's love. Sung with great avidity, Chapman has never tugged at the heart as in the way he sings (of his daughter), "Of all the things I want to say/The only thing you really need to know is.../I believe in you." "Angels Wish," on the other hand, extols our vertical blessings as Christians. Keying on the idea from the book of Hebrews that we are more privileged than the angels, "Angels Wish" has a stately and a majestic production so apropos of its message. Helmsman Brown Bannister and Chapman are again to be congratulated for the sweet sounding acoustic "Treasure of Jesus." Clocking in at less than 3 minutes, "Treasure of Jesus" is a befitting and succinct prayer to close off the album.
Though there are some delectable numbers, on the whole, "All Things New" does not match up to Chapman's lofty standard. Maybe instead of penning all the songs, Chapman should consider some outside input and perhaps a variation in terms of the production may bring in a little fresh air. Here's hoping, his next album will truly be "all things new."
